Could a new team and a fresh start for Mack Wilson Sr. be Coach Belichick’s next great addition? Could he be what the Patriots need for quickness at linebacker?

Will he set the edge and help stop the run? Will he step in and help the defense be able to shut down opponents? Will he fit into this organization, pick up the playbook and master it? Finally, will Mack Wilson Sr make the 53-man roster this season? We will look at his chances in this article.

Patriots’ Linebacker Mack Wilson Begins His College Career At Alabama.

Mack Wilson began his college football career at Alabama playing for coach Lou Saban in 2016. As a true freshman, he recorded eight tackles in fifteen games. Entering his sophomore season, Wilson looked to make a jump forward in his progress on the field. He played in 12 games, accounting for forty tackles, four interceptions, and scoring a touchdown. He continued to grow in Saban’s system and improved on the field in his Júnior year. In his junior year playing in fourteen games, he recorded 71 tackles, of which 33 were solo tackles, including one sack and two interceptions.

Mack Wilson Entered The NFL In 2019

Mack Wilson skipped his senior season at Alabama to enter the NFL Draft in 2019 and was selected 155th overall in the fifth round by the Cleveland Browns. In his first season with the Browns, he started fourteen games and played in 16 games as a rookie. In week nine against the Broncos, Mack had his best game as a rookie with five tackles and recording his first sack of the season.

He would close out his rookie year in Cleveland, registering his first interception against Arizona against quarterback Kyler Murray. His final stats in his first season with Cleveland proved his best with the team, as he recorded 82 tackles, seven pass deflections, one interception, and one sack. Unfortunately, his last two seasons with Cleveland slowed his production as he only recorded 78 tackles.

Patriots Traded For Mack Wilson Sr. This Off Season

As the offseason for the Patriots evolved, the team swung a trade with the Cleveland Browns for Mack Wilson Sr. The Patriots sent linebacker Chase Winovich to them in return. Coach Belichick is hoping Wilson can regain his form in college and freshman form with the Browns this season. He is slightly undersized at 6’1′ and only 233 pounds, but his quickness makes up for his size.

Thus far, things are looking great for him as he has stood out in training camp and off-season organized activities. Going into the first preseason game against the Giants, he is projected to get a lot of time on the field to show he can be a force on this team.

In the past, the Patriots have added players who could be crucial and successful additions to the team. Coach Bill Belichick hopes Mack Wilson Sr. will do just that and help reshape his defense. In addition, Wilson hopes a change of scenery could be a fresh start to his football career. He is hoping to be a big part of the new quicker defense to shut down opponents in the league.
