Nebraska Cornhuskers: A Mistake For The Ages

Do you think the Nebraska Cornhuskers should leave Scott Frost in Ireland?

The Nebraska Cornhuskers of the 1990s seem like centuries ago at this point. While it is nearly impossible to live up to the legacy of the great Tom Osborne, Scott Frost is nowhere near where they thought he would be. This is a team that will consistently give you competitive football but cannot find a way to win football games within eight points. Through 26 games the Nebraska Cornhuskers have won only 51 score ball games over the entire time Scott Frost has been the head coach of this football team. However, what if I told you this isn’t the biggest mistake that Nebraska football has ever made.

When the Nebraska Cornhuskers fired Bo Pelini they never would’ve guessed that they would go from perennial BCS bowl contenders to the laughingstock of college football so fast. During Bo Pelini’s tenure as the head coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers from 2008-2014 he posted a record of 67-27 and a conference record of 38-17 in the Big 12 and Big Ten Conference. So maybe you can consider it The Big Ten Kirsch and point towards Nebraska‘s move to the conference being their downfall or maybe it was the firing of Bo Pelini.

However, the fact remains that this football program has never recovered from that. Whether it be the conference move or the firing of their best head coach since the Tom Osborne era, the Nebraska Cornhuskers have been one of the most relevant power five teams in all of college football over the last eight years. When Scott Frost was hired to leave this program everybody thought it would be the return of glory days to Lincoln Nebraska but he has fallen right in line with the way this program has gone over the last eight seasons and has been nothing but a perennial loser.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers Under Scott Frost

He now has a career record of 15 victories and 30 losses as the head coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers. In 36 big 10 conference games has only managed to pick up 10 victories and it looks like Nebraska’s headed for yet another losing season after their embarrassing loss to the Northwestern Wildcats in week zero of the 2022 college football season. In four seasons this guy has never won more than three Big Ten conference games in a single season and has yet to post a winning season or make an appearance in a bowl game.

To put that into perspective, Bo Pelini never had a losing season during his six years as the head coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers. He was consistently leading them to bowl game appearances and ballgame victories as well as conference championship game appearances and conference championships. This is perhaps the greatest mistake that the Nebraska Cornhuskers football program has ever made. It is also a mistake that they have yet to recover from and at this rate it may be another couple of decades before they fully recover from this.

It is time for the University of Nebraska to realize the mistake they made and dismiss Scott Frost. The feel-good story about him coming home to his alma mater and leading the football team has worn off, as he has consistently disappointed this university throughout the last four seasons. If they don’t turn things around before the end of the 2022 college football season then there is absolutely no reason to allow him to leave this football program into the 2023 season.
