NCAA Women’s Title Game Had A Better Script Than Last Night’s WrestleMania

Updated: Jun 10, 2023

If you had lived under a rock for the last 24 hours, you would have missed one of the biggest stories in sports we might see all year. It came from the NCAA women’s basketball championship game between the LSU Tigers and the Iowa Hawkeyes.

ANGEL REESE TO CAITLIN CLARK 😳 — SportsCenter (@SportsCenter) April 2, 2023

LSU won the championship with the final score of 102-85, but a lot of the game itself was not discussed. LSU’s star forward Angel Reese decided to do the John Cena, you can’t see me and point to her ring finger in front of Iowa’s star Caitlin Clark.

The Taunting

It is funny that John Cena was brought up yesterday since WrestleMania was on Sunday Night, but the NCAA women’s title game had way better drama than Wrestle Mania.

Clark is just not a great women’s basketball player but she might be the greatest basketball player in all NCAA basketball right now.

Clark won every single award you can think of, and she also put up a 40-point triple-double in a March Madness game. Clark has been the face of college sports for the last couple of months, and there is a huge gap between Clark and the next best women’s college basketball player.

Reese decided to follow Clark around the court for about 15 seconds to taunt her, and everyone was all up in arms. If you went on Twitter for the day, you would see everyone was fighting with each other about if that was uncalled for or not. Clark also made the same gesture of you can’t see me in the March Madness game against Louisville a few weeks ago.

Of course, that was brought up in all the arguments, and at the end of the day let them both trash talk. Both events probably were a little over the top but that wasn’t even that big of a deal. There were other things in this game and postgame that should be brought up a lot more than John Cena, you can’t see me. Let’s start with the officiating.

The Officials

The officials were horrible, and it was for both sides. Every time LSU got the ball in the paint and the Iowa player breathed on them there was a foul called. LSU’s Reese also picked up two early fouls on fouls that I’m not even sure she really even made contact with the person, but you know college sports is all about the officials, and we got to watch the officiating screw up another big-time game.

LSU’s head coach Kim Mulkey whom you can’t miss on the sidelines because she wears some crazy outfits was all over the officials in the game and she had all the right to do so because of how bad they were, but there was a moment in the game that the official had to box out Mulkey from going nuts. Mulkey also is standing at the three-point line on every possession, but where is her technical foul?

Kim mulkey pushed a ref and it’s fine but Caitlin Clark got a tech and picked up her 4th foul for tossing a basketball behind her back ? Refs have been so bad — John (@iam_johnw) April 2, 2023

Clark picked up a technical foul when she tossed the ball out of bounce. I mean when you’re the greatest player in the game people are out for you, but to give her a technical foul for what she did and not to give one to Mulkey was uncalled for.

Caitlin Clark is whistled for a technical foul for this reaction. During a national championship game. There have been bad officiating calls before. This is the worst. — Ben Stevens (@BenScottStevens) April 2, 2023

The NCAA has always had an officiating issue, and it is one they never seem to want to fix, and they decided to ruin another great game.

Another thing that happened post-game that was very strange was when Angel Reese joined the ESPN broadcast crew and said I’ don’t take disrespect lightly.” She wasn’t referring to anything that happened to her but what happened in the final four game between Iowa and South Carolina.

The Disrespect

She stated they disrespected her South Carolina girls, and I’m assuming it’s by the way Iowa and Clark guarded them. Iowa pretty much guarded South Carolina like the entire NBA guards Ben Simmons from the three-point line and left an empty space between the defender and the shooter.

Just to clarify Angel thinks not defending the 3 pt line vs South Carolina was disrespectful to her. Am I taking crazy pills out here? — Dave Portnoy (@stoolpresidente) April 2, 2023

I have no idea how that was disrespectful at all. Iowa was going off the scouting report and left three-point shooters open who can’t shoot threes. Everyone knows that South Carolina is a great post team so they wanted to guard the post and would not focus on the three-point shooting as much.

Reese is one heck of a basketball player, but I have no idea where she was getting this disrespected feeling from, and it had nothing to do with her or her team.

LSU played great basketball and deserved to win the title, but the only thing people will remember from this game was everything besides the ball.
