Mississippi State Football Win/Loss Prediction: 2022-23

Can Mississippi State make some noise in the SEC West in 2022? Or will the Bulldogs stay in the middle of the pack?

The Bulldogs finished the 2021 season with a 7-6 record. As we head into year three under Mike Leach, there is optimism that this team could win at least nine games. Will the Bulldogs win the SEC West or the SEC overall? Doubtful but they have a pass-first offense that is difficult to beat and that will be their path to winning more games.

The Bulldogs had six games where there were over 400 passing yards but only one 500 total yard game. If Leach can get the offense more active than they already are, this could be a productive season. The defense is also going to be the best group Leach has had since coming to State. That being said, let’s check out the Mississippi State Bulldogs 2022 schedule.

Week One, Home Game vs Memphis

Week one is a rematch of a non-conference game that ended with a controversial call in 2021 and a Memphis win. Memphis lost nearly all of their production from last year and that is all the Bulldogs need to exact their revenge. Leach will want to win this game by at least three touchdowns and they will have no problem doing so. Give me the Bulldogs to win a blowout and get the revenge win after last years ending.

Score Prediction: Mississippi State 42, Memphis 7

Week Two, Away Game vs Arizona

Week two has the Bulldogs on the road to take on the Arizona Wildcats. Arizona has won just one game in the last two seasons. However, the Wildcats have a sneaky offense that could give the Bulldogs defense fits early on. I do not see Leach’s squad having much trouble winning this game though by the third quarter. The Bulldogs red-hot offense will roll late and make this game look like it was never close.

Score Prediction: Mississippi State 48, Arizona 14

Week Three, Away Game vs LSU

Conference play begins in week four with a trip to Death Valley to take on LSU. This is a high powered Leach team getting their first look at the Brian Kelly LSU Tigers. The last time the Bulldogs played in Death Valley, former quarterback K.J. Costello passed for an SEC-record 623 yards and five touchdowns. The Bulldogs veteran QB in Will Rogers is a budding superstar and is more than capable of replicating that performance but I do not see that happening. Give me the Bulldogs to get a big win on the road and prove they can win big games in the SEC.

Score Prediction: Mississippi State 38, LSU 24

Week Four, Home Game vs Bowling Green

The Bulldogs get a break in week four with a non-conference game against Bowling Green. There is no reason to think Bowling Green competes in this game. This game will be over before halftime and give the starters plenty of rest. With Texas A&M coming to Starkville in week five, Leach will be happy to let his starters regroup.

Score Prediction: Mississippi State 62, Bowling Green 7

Week Five, Home Game vs Texas A&M

Here is where the Bulldogs schedule starts to get dicy. First up, a home matchup with a Texas A&M squad that is hoping to be playing for a national title in January. Last season in College Station, the Bulldogs upset head coach Jimbo Fisher and the Aggies. The Bulldogs are good enough to hang around for the entire game despite the talented A&M roster. However, the Aggies are going to be too good to lose this game even on the road. This will be a high-scoring shootout with the Aggies coming out victorious.

Score Prediction: Texas A&M 48, Mississippi State 41

Week Six, Home Game vs Arkansas

The Razorbacks then come to Starkville in week six for another big SEC matchup. The only way the Bulldogs win this game is with a career day from Will Rogers and his receivers. However, this will be another game on Razorback QB KJ Jeffersons NFL scouting resume that will help him move up those draft boards. This will be a gritty and ugly game where it comes down to who controls the ball last. Give me the Razorbacks to win this close one and get back in the win column.

Mississippi State vs Arkansas (USA Today)

Week Seven, Away Game vs Kentucky

The Bulldogs go back on the road after a long home stand to take on the Kentucky Wildcats. ESPN FPI has the Wildcats at a 63 percent chance to win this game. That is enough to convince me that Kentucky is the better squad in 2022. The Bulldogs will bring their air-raid offense that will make this a fast-paced game and likely a high-scoring game.

However, the Wildcat’s secondary has a playmaking corner in Carrington Valentine. Losing Cedric Dort to Wisconsin isn’t a plus but the safeties will be solid, especially with Tyrell Ajian leading the pack. Look for this group to make big plays late and seal the deal on this game for a big Kentucky win.

Week Eight, Away Game vs Alabama

The road trip continues in week eight with a trip to Tuscaloosa. Nick Saban has never had a problem beating Mississippi State. That being said, I like Alabama to take advantage of this late-season home game and win convincingly. Bryce Young will be the key factor here and outgun the Bulldog’s fast-paced air attack offense. The Bulldogs hang around for a few quarters but nothing more.

Week Nine, Home Game vs Auburn

The Bulldogs finally return home to host the Auburn Tigers in week nine. Bo Nix is gone and so is most of their impact players. The Tigers also lost their offensive coordinator just week after hiring him. This Tigers team is not prepped for the SEC this year and Mississippi State will eat that up. Give me the Bulldogs in a comfortable win and another SEC win to their record.

Score Prediction: Mississippi State 42, Auburn 21

Week Ten, Home Game vs Georgia

The Bulldogs then get the pleasure of hosting the defending champion Georgia Bulldogs in week ten. Georgia and State do not meet up often considering they play on opposite sides of the SEC. In the only six meetings between these squads, Georgia has won five of them. This 2022 Mississippi State team is going to be a problem in the SEC West. This will be the terrifying trap game for Georgia and Mississippi State knows they can win this one at home.

However, the difference between a national champion program and a team competing in their conference are two different levels in the SEC. That will be the difference here as the Georgia Bulldogs will defeat the Mississippi State Bulldogs in a tough road win. Georgia winning this one will all but solidify the Dogs to run the table in the regular season.

Week Eleven, Home Game vs East Tennessee State

The final non-conference game of the 2022 season does not come until week eleven. This game will be over early and the starters will get a rest before the annual Egg Bowl. Look for the Bulldogs’ offense to light up the scoreboard early and often.

Score Prediction: Mississippi State 56, ETS 7

Week Twelve, Away Game vs Ole Miss

The final game of the regular season is the annual Egg Bowl with Ole Miss. This will be a tough game for both teams but the Rebels getting this game at home will help immensely. Give me the Rebels in a tough Egg Bowl battle for the ages with Ole miss coming out on top. This loss will leave a bad taste in the Bulldogs mouth as they end the year without double-digit wins again.

Final Record For Mississippi State Football In 2022-23: 6-6 (2-6)

This prediction might come off a bit harsh with how highly I spoke about this Bulldog offense. Their schedule is just not very friendly to them in 2022. I fully beleive this team can prove me wrong and win more than six games. I am going to take the safe route here though and keep the Bulldogs at .500 for the season. They might get a bowl game depending how the rest of the conferences pan out. Sorry if this one ticks you off State fans.
