Michigan In-State Rivalry Ends In Assault Charges

On Saturday, October 29, the Michigan Wolverines hosted little brother, the Michigan State Spartans. This in-state rivalry goes back decades for all of the major college sports. The Wolverines took care of business by beating the Spartans 29-7 after Michigan kicker Jake Moody hit five field goals. At least eight players on the MSU team didn’t take the loss lightly, as they were caught on video beating up a Michigan player.

Shortly after the game, there were reports that up to ten MSU players were seen punching, kicking, and stomping on Gemon Green. This was two weeks after a scuffle in the tunnel at halftime between the Wolverines and the Penn State Nittany Lions. Unfortunately for the players, they were still in their jerseys, so they were easily identified in the video that the University of Michigan Police Department turned over to the prosecutors.

On November 23, 2022, seven MSU players were charged. The Michigan State athletics department had already suspended all seven players. In addition, there was one MSU player that was suspended but was not charged with assault. Michigan State head coach Mel Tucker had told reporters after the incident that there’s “no excuse for behavior that puts our team or our opponents at risk.”
