Major League Baseball Playoff Race Update: National League 9/18/22
The Major League Baseball playoff race is heating up, but is your team going to make the postseason?
The 2022 Major League Baseball season has already entered its final month and the playoff races are hot and heavy heading into the final few weeks of the season. There are still several teams competing for divisional crowns and for one of the six wildcard spots at stake in all of Major League Baseball. The tightest race in the league right now is the American League Central division title race at the two top teams in the division are separated by less than two games heading into one of the final Mondays of the season. The National League east division title race is close as well as the Atlanta Braves New York Mets are neck and neck.
It’s time to take a look at the National League playoff race as the season is coming down to its final few weeks. There are still several teams in playoff contention and most importantly, seeding, which will end up playing a huge role in who will face off with who in the 2022 Major League Baseball playoffs.
Major League Baseball Playoff Race
National League East
New York Mets (93-55) Magic Number: 15
The New York Mets have looked very impressive this season, and they look to be on their way to closing out the National League East division in just another week or so. At the middle point of the season people were thinking it would be an all New York World Series, but at the moment it looks more like the Mets will be playing in the Major League Baseball fall classic instead of the Yankees.
Atlanta Braves (91-55) Two Games Back
The Atlanta Braves look ready to go for a shot in a 2nd straight World Series championship. They have put together a strong 2022 Major League Baseball season after many people thought they would’ve regressed after losing Freddie Freeman to the Los Angeles Dodgers. While they likely won’t bring home the National League East division crown, they currently have possession of the top wild card spot in the National League.
Philadelphia Phillies (80-66) 12 Games Back
It has been a quietly successful year for the Philadelphia Phillies as they will be looking to sneak into a National League wildcard spot as the 2022 Major League Baseball season heads towards the final stretch. Philadelphia currently holds onto a two game lead for the third wildcard spot over the Milwaukee Brewers.
Miami Marlins (60-87) Can No Longer Win Division
It has been a rough Major League Baseball season for the Miami Marlins and they are all officially eliminated from playoff contention and winning the National League East at this point.
Washington Nationals (51-95) Cannot Win Division
It has been a rough Major League Baseball season for the Washington Nationals and they are officially eliminated from playoff contention and winning the National League East at this point. They are on pace to lose triple digit games this season.
National League Central
St. Louis Cardinals (87-61) Magic Number: 8
The Cardinals have been tremendous this season, and they look while on their way to clinching the National League Central. Surprisingly Albert Pujols has done a lot of damage on offense for the Cardinals team as he nears his 700th career home run. The Cardinals have a real opportunity to make some noise in the postseason as long as they’re starting rotation stays intact throughout the remainder of the regular season.
Milwaukee Brewers (78-68) Eight Games Back
The Milwaukee Brewers are currently fighting for a playoff spot in the National League wildcard race as they trail the third wildcard team by two games. While they aren’t officially eliminated from the National League Central division race, they are eight games back with 16 games to play so it seems to be as good as ever at this point.
Chicago Cubs (62-84) Can No Longer Win Division
It has been a rough season for the Chicago Cubs and they are officially eliminated from playoff contention and winning the National League Central division.
Cincinnati Reds (58-89) Can No Longer Win Division
It has been a rough season for the Cincinnati Reds and they are officially eliminated from playoff contention and winning the National League Central division at this point. They are on pace to lose triple digit games this season.
Pittsburgh Pirates (55-92) Can No Longer Win Division
It has been a rough season for the Pittsburgh Pirates and they are officially eliminated from playoff contention and winning the National League Central division at this point. They are on pace to lose triple digit games this season.
National League West
Los Angeles Dodgers (100-44) Magic Number: 0
The Los Angeles Dodgers have already locked up the National League West division and look to be the best team in all of Major League Baseball heading into the postseason. They will be in a great spot to bring home a title as long as they can remain healthy throughout the remainder of the season.
San Diego Padres (80-66) Can’t Win The Division
The San Diego Padres have had a solid season, but they will have to settle for a National League wildcard spot instead of a division title this season. All the moves they made at the deadline has put them in position to make a deep run in the postseason but they will have to remain healthy and do it without Fernando Tatis Junior as well.
San Francisco Giants (69-76) Can’t Win The Division
It has been a rough season for the San Francisco Giants and they are officially eliminated from playoff contention and winning the National League West at this point.
Arizona Diamondbacks (68-77) Can’t Win The Division
It has been a rough season for the Arizona Diamondbacks and they are officially eliminated from playoff contention and winning the National League West at this point.
Colorado Rockies (64-82) Can’t Win The Division
It has been a rough season for the Colorado Rockies and they are officially eliminated from playoff contention and winning the National League West at this point.
