Jets Make This Big Move But Could That Open Up The Door For Another Signing ?

The New York Jets and defensive tackle Quinnen Williams agreed to terms yesterday on a four-year, $96 million extension. Speculations arose when Williams updated his Twitter bio to read, “Defensive Tackle for The NEW YORK JETS.” NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport were the first to break the news which was then officially announced by the Jets organization.

New York will be paying Williams an average of $24 million per year, which now makes him the second highest-paid player at his position passing Titans DT Jeffery Simmons and sitting one behind Los Angeles Rams DT Aaron Donald, rightfully so. The deal includes $66 million in guaranteed money and will extend Williams’ contract an additional four years, keeping him with the Jets through 2027.

"The success of this organization is beyond important to me and completing this deal allows me to turn all my attention to positively impacting that. I am thrilled to put forth my best efforts alongside my brothers to get prepared for this season ahead of us." - Quinnen Williams

With the team reporting to training camp next week along with the reports of the Jets being this year’s Hard Knocks team, the Quinnen Williams extension was something that had to get done sooner rather than later. Not having Williams in camp would have escalated the drama with the HBO special coming to Florham Park, New Jersey.

Are The Jets Done?

Now that the Jets have their star defensive tackle locked up, what’s next for Gang Green? New York has done a substantial job this off-season in solidifying the roster around their new quarterback Aaron Rodgers, but there’s one more move I could see them making before the season begins.

Kwon Alexander is a player that I could see the Jets turning back to if they sense a weakness at the linebacker position. New York chose not to re-sign him during the early part of free agency but with Kwon still available, New York could look for a reunion.

The Jets re-signed Quinnen Williams’ brother, Quincy, earlier this year but the other linebacker spot next to C.J. Mosley seems to be open. Kwon appeared in all 17 games for the Jets last season, starting 12 of them, and also played 13 games over two seasons for Robert Saleh when he was the defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers. Training camp will provide an open competition for the last starting linebacker job, but if the Jets bring back Kwon, then it would presumably be his job to lose.
