Jets Begin Training Camp With A Trade, Commitments, And New Uniforms

New York Jets rookies and veterans reported to training camp on Wednesday, July 19th. That date has been marked in the players, coaches, and fans’ calendars for a while now.

New York was the only team in the league to have all of its players report as early as they did. With the Hall of Fame game vs. Browns scheduled for Thursday, August 3rd, the Jets made sure to get a head start to the 2023 season.

Wrapping Up The Rookie Class

New York announced late afternoon last Wednesday that their first and second-round picks, Iowa State EDGE Will McDonald IV and Wisconsin center Joe Tippmann, have signed their rookie contracts. The Jets' top picks were the last two to be signed in order to officially lock up the 2023 rookie class.

McDonald looks to make an immediate impact on defense this season while Tippmann could very well begin this year as the Jets’ starting center depending on how he and Connor McGovern perform in training camp.

Jets Send Mims To Detroit

Later that evening New York agreed to a deal with Detroit that would send WR Denzel Mims to the Lions. Along with the second-round wide receiver, the Jets gave up a 2025 seventh-rounder in exchange for a 2025 conditional sixth-round pick.

Before the trade, it was reported that New York was going to waive Mims if they could not find a suitor.

Jets fans were probably happy to see that the team was able to get something in return for a player that just could not make it work for Gang Green.

Rodgers Here To Stay?

Aaron Rodgers’ commitment to New York, in terms of how many years he is going to play, is the number one concern for the Jets when giving up a first-round pick in the deal with Green Bay earlier this offseason.

On Friday of last week, both Robert Saleh and Rodgers himself gave Jets fans a little room to breathe when talking about how long we could see the four-time MVP play in the green and white.

Saleh told reporters that he would be “shocked” if Rodgers doesn’t play multiple years for the Jets. Aaron Rodgers also said Friday on ESPN New York’s DiPietro & Rothenberg Show that “the Jets gave up a lot for me, so to play just one year, I think would be a disservice.”

Rodgers then alluded to any injuries or even a Super Bowl win could possibly shorten his stay but besides that, he seems like a full go:

“Now, if that one year turns out to be a magical year, who knows? But it’s more than that, It’s how my body feels. The last couple of months my body has been feeling really good. Now talk to me in three to four months. We’ll see how it feels, but the way I feel now, I think I could play a number of years.” - Aaron Rodgers

New York Gets New Unis

On Monday morning Jets owner Woody Johnson announced that the team will be wearing their new “Legacy Uniforms” inspired by the New York Sack Exchange.

New York made sure to pay attention to every detail in order to pay homage to those 1980s Jets teams.

Lastly, Gang Green will wear their new threads at home in Week 1 vs. Bills and Week 4 vs. Chiefs this season in which MetLife Stadium will receive a makeover as well.
