Jamie Gillan: Lost In London
Now, you might be asking yourself, who the hell is Jamie Gillan? Gillan is the punter for the New York Giants. Gillan originally entered the league undrafted out of Arkansas-Pine Bluff in 2019.
Jamie Gillan, “The Scottish Hammer”, is in his first season with the Giants after punting for the Cleveland Browns from 2019-2021 and a short stay with the Buffalo Bills practice squad. Gillan is averaging a career-best 51 yards per punt (4th best in the NFL) with a long of 69 yards in five games this season. But who cares about that?
Last week, the Giants came out with a big 27-22 victory over the Green Bay Packers in London. A big win that puts the Giants at 4-1 now heading into Week Six. Gillan had two punts in London both averaging 50 yards. The Giants were without a key special teams player on the plane ride home after that win, and that player is Gillan.
Gillan first came to the US on a NATO visa with his father. That designation didn’t get changed to a work visa when Gillan got to the NFL. Somehow this was not seen by Giants personnel or the NFL prior to the team heading to London. Therefore, U.S. diplomats reportedly had to step in to set up a new passport for the punter.
After apparent passport issues, Gillan was forced to stay in London and was not allowed to travel back to the US with the team. However, Gillan is expected to be back in the US as soon as Thursday. If Gillan cannot play this week, the Giants are working out punters to have a backup plan.
The Giants are scheduled to host the Baltimore Ravens this Sunday. If Gillan is not back with the team before then, the Giants might be going for it on fourth down if they cannot find a replacement punter.
