Injury Report: Commanders Add Four Players To PUP

Injury Report

It didn’t take long for the Washington Commanders to make their first roster move of training camp Tuesday as the team placed four players on the physically unable to perform list (PUP).

The four players placed on the PUP are defensive end Chase Young, tight end Logan Thomas, and centers Chase Roullier and Tyler Larson. Offensive lineman Cornelius Lucas was also placed on the Active/Non-Football Injury List.

We have placed the following players on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform List: –C Tyler Larsen –C Chase Roullier –TE Logan Thomas –DE Chase Young And placed T Cornelius Lucas on the Active/Non-Football Injury List — Washington Commanders (@Commanders) July 26, 2022

For Chase Young, the move was expected as the former rookie of the year continues to recover from ACL surgery. Young is trying to get back on track after having a slow start to the season and then missing eight games last year due to injury.

When asked about his injury status back in June, Young didn’t sound all that concerned.

“Everything is going as planned. I’m happy where I’m at and I’m confident on everything I’m doing going forward.”

For Logan Thomas and Chase Roullier, this may be more of a precaution than anything else as it was thought those two were further along in their progression after offseason procedures. At any rate, members of the local media have been saying for several weeks now to expect a few Washington players to spend at least a small amount of time on the PUP list.

“I thought Logan Thomas looked really good as well. We’re not quite sure, but he’ll be down the line a little bit.” – Ron Rivera

Ron Rivera said of the 4 players on PUP: "Chase Young is probably the one that will take the most time. It was serious. Anytime you're talking about an ACL it's down the line. We have to wait and see." Said Chase Roullier might be the 1st to come off the list. — John Keim (@john_keim) July 26, 2022

There has been a growing feeling as of late that Young could miss a substantial amount of time. “We need some other guys on the other side to step up,” Rivera said. “I think Casey’s [Toohill] going to get an opportunity. James Smith-Williams will get an opportunity.”

Rivera was asked about Cornelius Lucas heading to the Non-Football Injury list, and his response was encouraging.

“It should be short-term. We’re just waiting for him to see the doctor and we’ll go from there.” When asked about his level of concern about both centers being on the PUP, Rivera said, “not necessarily just because of the guys that we have in position. Like Wes Schweitzer’s a more than an accomplished football player, who’s done a great job for us at guard and center when he’s played both positions. So you feel really good about that.” “The two veteran guards are guys that I know a lot about, I’ve seen them play, we’ve seen them play, and they’re very trustworthy. We like the depth at that position.”

As most know by now, Rivera prides himself on position versatility. So it should surprise no one that his plan B would be shifting a guy over who could already start at guard.

That, of course, also opens the door to a possible depth issue heading into the season if they have any other issues at the position. Thankfully they drafted Chris Paul in the seventh round this past spring.
