How Will Jalen Hurts Improve In Year Three?

Over the last several years there has been an abundance of quarterback controversy for the Philadelphia Eagles. On one hand, letting Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles sign with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2019. Then, on the other hand, trading their franchise QB Carson Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts in 2021. All of these events have taken place to ultimately have Jalen Hurts be “the guy.”

After watching Hurts complete his first full year as a starter, we have gotten a good look at what he is capable of. Whether it is the fans in the stands or the ones watching from home, they are not apologetic.

Eagles fans will let you know exactly how they feel about your performance. Good games or bad games. So how does Hurts need to improve to have a successful year three?

Accuracy

Whether it was his college days at Alabama and Oklahoma, or even now at the collegiate level with Philadelphia. It seems like everyone has been talking about Hurts’ accuracy being an issue. For his short NFL career, Hurts has thrown 580 pass attempts with 342 of them being completed.

That puts Hurt’s career completion percentage at 58.97%. Not the most spectacular stats in the world by any means. To give credit where credit is due, Hurts is not a pure pocket passer.

There are a few key elements that show that Hurts’ accuracy will improve this season. One of the main reasons being, he has continued to improve at a consistent rate thus far in his career.

During Hurts’ rookie campaign in 2020, he finished with a 52% completion percentage. Which is nothing to write home about. However, Hurts made a solid jump by finishing with a 61.3% completion percentage last season. It is no secret that Hurts is a hard worker and has certainly put the time in to be better this coming season. Will his completion percentage reach new heights in 2022?

Reading The Field

Just like with Carson Wentz, Hurts seems to have a tunnel vision. It has been a repeated problem for Hurts in his young career so far. There have been many plays where Hurts has failed to see a wide-open receiver or a blown coverage.

The couch cushion quarterbacks are the first to chime in the second they see a mistake on their television. What is seen on TV looks a lot different than what is actually seen on the field. That said, Hurts needs to find a way to see the entire field.

What better way for Hurts to learn how to see the field, than by learning from the best? According to JAKIB Media’s Dan Sileo, Hurts was recently in Southern California working out and spending a lot of time together with the GOAT himself, Tom Brady. Brady’s tutelage could not only help with adjusting Hurts’ field vision but will instill a winning mentality in the toughest situations. Hurts is in the right situation and will be honing his craft with one of the best.

Soaring Up

Even though Hurts has a few flaws, there is a positive side to it all. Along with growth, Hurts now has experience. For the first time in his football career, Hurts will operate under the same offense for a second consecutive year. Having experience with the same offensive scheme heading into 2022, Hurts will have the edge he has never had before, consistency.

Hurts has a few key pieces around him that could propel him to superstardom, whether it’s the 2020 Heisman winner, wide receiver DeVonta Smith, or All-Pro center Jason Kelce.

The Eagles seem interested in building around Hurts. Hurts has been given another year to answer the question: Is he the Eagles’ long-term quarterback? Come Week One of the 2022 NFL season, will Hurts have improved enough?
