How Have The Eagles Fared Against Lions’ Quarterback Jared Goff

The Philadelphia Eagles are getting ready for their season opening matchup in Detroit. The team has faced Lions’ quarterback Jared Goff four times. Overall, the Eagles have fared pretty well against him. Here is a quick rundown of Jared Goff’s four games vs the Eagles.

Jared Goff was a member of the Los Angeles Rams in three of the games until last year when he was traded to the Detroit Lions.

December 2017

Eagles 43 Rams 35

Eagles’ fans will never forget this matchup. It was the number one pick in the 2016 draft (Jared Goff) vs the number two pick of the draft (Carson Wentz) at the LA Coliseum. Through three quarters, Carson Wentz outplayed Jared Goff. In a rushing attempt for the goal line, Wentz took a hit to the knee. He stayed in and even threw a touchdown pass as the Eagles took a 31-28 lead. Jared Goff and the Rams retook the lead before Nick Foles came in and led a comeback effort.

Jared Goff finished the game 16 of 26 for 199 yards and two touchdowns. He was not bad but couldn’t make the big plays down the stretch. Goff ended up leading the Rams to an 11-5 record where they lost the wildcard game against the Atlanta Falcons. Nick Foles and the Eagles took the unlikeliest path to the first Super Bowl win in franchise history.

December 2018

Eagles 30 Rams 23

The Eagles and Rams were set for a rematch just over a year later. It was a pivotal game for the Eagles as they were fighting to stay alive in the playoff chase. Jared Goff and the Rams came into the game at an impressive 11-2 record.

The Eagles once again turned to Nick Foles at quarterback who replaced an injured Carson Wentz (back). Foles and the Eagles built a 30-13 lead before Goff started to get going in the fourth quarter. Goff was without his number once receiver Cooper Kupp but still passed for 339 yards. He also had an interception in the game. Goff had the Rams on a potential game tying drive, but the drive stalled in the red zone. Both teams made the postseason with the Rams making it to the Super Bowl before losing to the Patriots.

September 2020

Rams 37 Eagles 19

The Eagles hosted the Rams in the second week of the 2020 season. Goff played really well as the Rams built a 21-3 lead by the second quarter. The Eagles got within 5 before the Rams pulled away again. Goff went 20 of 27 for 267 yards and three touchdowns. It was easily his best game against the Eagles in his career.

The 2020 season marked the end of the Goff era in Los Angels as well as the Wentz era in Philadelphia. Goff’s Rams could not get by the Packers in the playoffs before the team realized they needed to upgrade at quarterback to compete with the elite teams. Philadelphia ended the season at 4-11-1which made them trade Wentz away to the Colts and fire head coach Doug Pederson.

October 2021

Eagles 44 Lions 6

2021 was a new era for Jared Goff. He was traded to the Lions for Matthew Stafford. The Eagles also had a fresh start with Jalen Hurts at quarterback and Nick Sirianni as head coach. Philadelphia entered the game 2-5 while Goff and the Lions were 0-7.

This game helped turn the Eagles season around while also waking the Lions up. The Eagles had a 17-0 lead by halftime and didn’t get scored on until midway through the fourth quarter. Goff went 25 of 34 for 222 yards. He was sacked five times as he struggled to get anything going on offense.

Jared Goff and the Lions finally did not lose the following week as they managed a tie against the Steelers. The Lions also had a couple of close losses down the stretch but picked up three wins. Philadelphia also got better after this game. They went 7-2 over the next two months to finish the season with a 9-8 record to clinch a wildcard spot before losing to the Buccaneers in the playoffs.

2022

The Eagles are getting ready to face a Detroit team with Jared Goff that they easily handled last year. This presents an opportunity that they can’t get too overconfident in. The Lions much like the Eagles spent the offseason upgrading the team.

Some of the key additions for Detroit on offense are running back Justin Jackson, wide receiver D.J. Chark, and the draft pick of wide receiver Jameson Williams. These are significant pieces for Jared Goff as he will try to get the Lions a winning record this year.

The Eagles made some major additions this offseason as well. Some of the biggest names to watch include wide receiver A.J. Brown, cornerback James Bradberry, linebacker Kyzir White, and edge rusher Haason Reddick.

In Conclusion

The Eagles seem to have figured out Jared Goff the former University of California star. He has only one win vs the Eagles and looked bad in the game a year ago. This game won’t be as easy for the Eagles, but it should not be a particularly difficult matchup for this Eagles defense to handle.

Will the Eagles be able to handle Jared Goff this Sunday? Let us know in the comments. Check out our latest content and don’t forget to follow our Facebook and Twitter pages for more Eagles coverage.
