Gotham Continues Their Unbeaten Streak as They Down The Wave

The New York/New Jersey Gotham extended their win streak to five and their unbeaten streak to eight with this midweek win against the San Diego Wave. This game was filled with NWSL drama and extra-time goals.

First Half

Gotham started strong during the first half of the game. They could hold possession of the ball well, and most of the first half took place in San Diego’s territory. While many chances were created during regulation time, none of the shots seemed to find the back of the net. It was not until the third minute of added time that Rose Lavelle lofted a shot over Kailen Sheridan’s head to score the game's first goal.

Second Half

To combat Gotham’s lethal attack, The Wave also had to press hard. San Diego, stunning midfielders, defenders, and fans immediately invaded Gotham's territory. In the third minute of the second half, Mya Jones was able to sneak the ball behind Ann Katrin-Berger to equalize the match. This equalizer was also her first career goal.

With San Diego back in the game, Gotham’s defense had their work cut out for them as the Wave enacted a high-press tactic after halftime. San Diego kept possession during the half and took many shots. However, they could not score another goal, as Katrin-Berger could stop every opportunity created.

In the 79th minute, Mandy Freeman received a yellow card for a nasty challenge against Abby Dahlkemper. Freeman stepped on the defender's ankle while running for the ball, which was in Dahlkemper’s possession. The game was then paused because the officials wanted to use VAR to see if they needed to upgrade the penalty to a red card. Once reviewing the play, no red card was awarded since Freeman could not move her foot anywhere else.

Due to injuries, water breaks, and penalty reviews, 10 minutes of extra time were added. As the game was ending, fans were anxious, and tensions were rising in Red Bull Stadium, as they wanted a goal. In the eighth minute of extra time, Maycee Bell scored a difficult goal, and the Bats were able to come on top once again. When the whistle blew, a sense of relief fell across the crowd as Gotham received their first win against San Diego in franchise history.

Tidbits and Moving Forward

Gotham was the better team in this game. The Bats had 14 shots taken, 9 of which were on target, compared to San Diego’s 3 shots, only 1 of which was on target. Gotham also controlled possession 59% of the game. Their passing and defense were better than the Waves', with 84% of their passes being successful and 62% of their tackles being won.

Gotham’s next game is against the Washington Spirit, who served them their last loss in April. The Spirit has also hired Jonathan Giraldez, two-time UWCL winner, to be their manager. The Spirit has also been doing well this season, as they are in third place. If Gotham can have a strong backline, as well as a crafty offense, the next game will be exciting.
