Former NASCAR Cup Champion Set To Retire After 2024 Season

According to Jordan Bianchi of the Athletic, Martin Truex Jr. has decided to retire following the 2024 NASCAR season.

Truex has raced in the premier NASCAR series since 2004, winning 33 of his 672 races. The New Jersey native won the championship in 2017. There were rumors he'd quit racing following last season but decided to continue for another year.

Truex Jr. Is In The Middle Of The 2024 Playoff Race

The 19-car has had a steady 2024 season. Truex is fifth in the Cup Series standings with 508 points, thanks to seven top-ten finishes, four top-five finishes, and two stage wins. If Truex continues to run the way he has thus far, he should have a shot at the championship.

Truex is expected to talk to the media during a press conference on Friday as the Cup Series makes its first appearance at Iowa Speedway.

What's Next For Joe Gibbs Racing?

With Truex Jr. on the way out, Joe Gibbs Racing has a big seat to fill. Bob Pockrass of FOX Sports believes Chase Briscoe could be the driver to take over for Truex next season. Briscoe is currently under contract with Stewart-Haas Racing, but the company has decided to remove itself from NASCAR after the 2024 campaign.

Briscoe is 29 and has raced in the Cup Series for four seasons. He's recorded 11 top-five finishes and 26 top-ten results during his career. His lone Cup Series win came in 2022.

Assuming no other changes for Joe Gibbs Racing, the 2025 NASCAR Cup drivers would include Denny Hamlin, Christopher Bell, Ty Gibbs, and potentially Chase Briscoe. JGR is looking for its first NASCAR Cup Series Championship since Kyle Busch won it in 2019.
