Five Standouts From Camp
With Commanders training camp currently in week three, there have been several standouts along the way. Here’s a look at five players that have turned heads.
Training camp is a crucial time in the NFL season because it’s the first time since January that you’ll be seeing players in full pads hitting each other. During training camp, you get to see all of the team’s new acquisitions for the first time and see which players have improved or regressed the most during the offseason.
The Washington Commanders have finished their third week of training camp, and there have been some clear standouts. Some of those standouts are rookies, some are star players, and some are guys fighting to make a roster spot.
Jahan Dotson, WR, Washington Commanders
Jahan Dotson has been Carson Wentz’s favorite target so far in camp. Even over Commanders captain and star wide receiver Terry McLaurin. Dotson has shown off his great hands and catch radius in camp, making acrobatic one-handed catches, and hauling in some high passes from Carson Wentz.
Dotson has shown why the Washington Commanders drafted him in the first round and is sure to have a big impact on this offense in 2022. He may be the biggest of all the standouts.
Kendall Fuller, CB, Washington Commanders
This is Kendall Fuller’s third season with Ron Rivera and the Washington Commanders, and he has been among the standouts in the secondary during camp. Kendall has been lining up on the outside with William Jackson III on the other side, and Benjamin St-Juste in the slot.
Fuller has been all over the place during camp constantly breaking up screens, making interceptions, and breaking up a ton of passes. He has yet to make a Pro-Bowl during his six-year NFL career, but with the way he’s looked in camp, it would not be surprising if he makes his first appearance this year.
Kendall Fuller is not getting enough love. Boy put them straps on everyone who lined up against him last night. Everyone including 17. — Manny Benton (@manny_benton) August 7, 2022
Dax Milne, WR, Washington Commanders
Dax Milne isn’t a big name like some of the other players on this list, but he’s been outstanding through the first three weeks of training camp. Due to Curtis Samuel being in and out of practice, Milne has been getting some reps with the first team.
Dax has been very impressive with the first team making catch after catch from Carson Wentz. He’s done a little bit of everything this camp making some tough catches through contact, catching deep passes from Wentz, and even returning kicks and punts. Milne has been clearly among the standouts during camp and is looking like a roster lock at this point.
Commanders Head Coach Ron Rivera has been highly impressed with Dax and had this to say when asked what his thoughts were on Milne.
“I’ve seen exactly that, very consistent player, good route runner, very headsy guy that understands, you know, certain things about what we do and how we do it. Now he just continues to go out and make catches.”

Montez Sweat, DE, Washington Commanders
With Chase Young expected to be out for the first few weeks of the season, Washington will need Montez Sweat to step up, and that’s exactly what he’s done in training camp. Sweat has constantly been in the backfield blowing up run plays and getting to the quarterback. He’s put pressure on Carson Wentz consistently throughout almost every single practice on his way to being listed among the rest of the standouts from camp.
Sweat has yet to have a double-digit sack season, but with the way he’s playing, he’ll most likely accomplish that this season.
Montez Sweat continues to have a really strong camp. On a fourth and 10, he forced the strip on Wentz. Feels like he gets back there consistently — Matthew Paras (@Matthew_Paras) August 9, 2022
Cole Turner, TE, Washington Commanders
Before Cole Turner tweaked his hamstring last week he was lighting things up during Commanders training camp. Turner quickly became one of Wentz’s favorite targets and made a few acrobatic catches.
During camp, Cole has also been a great threat in the red zone making a few touchdown grabs. With Logan Thomas out because of an ACL tear, Turner was getting most of the reps with the first team and is sure to get a ton of targets to start the season.
