ESPN Analyst Says NBA Free Agents Want To Play With Victor Wembanyama

The San Antonio Spurs hit the lottery jackpot on June 22, 2023, when NBA Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum announced that the Charlotte Hornets had the second pick in the 2023 Draft. The announcement meant that San Antonio would select first, and would be able to pick Victor Wembanyama.

The French teenager was being touted as the greatest draft prospect since LeBron James in 2003. Standing 7'4" and possessing ball handling and shooting skills of a guard, his highlight reels looked like Kevin Durant if you added half a foot to the 14-time all-star. There was no doubt that he was going to be the face of the league for the foreseeable future.

A Strong Rookie Campaign

Wembanyama played 71 games for the Spurs, averaging 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.2 steals, and 3.6 blocks (league leader). He won the Rookie of the Year, and finished second for Defensive Player of the Year, with the latter stolen from him and given to Rudy Gobert of the Timberwolves.

Recording 20 points or more in a game 41 times and at least 10 rebounds in a game 44 times, Wembanyama was not just a rookie star, he was an NBA star all season long. The Spurs may have gone just 19-52 when he played, and 22-60 overall, but according to an ESPN analyst, they may have their pick of the free agency litter.

Everybody Loves Wemby

"Every free agent, all the veteran guards that are going to be in the market," Jonathan Givony said while appearing on The Ringer's NBA Draft Show. "They all want to play with Victor." He didn't speculate on specifically who wants to team up with the reigning Rookie of the Year, but it's hard for the imagination not to run wild.

The 2024 Free Agent class features promising young players like Tyrese Maxey and Miles Bridges. It also has established veterans like DeMar DeRozan, Paul George, and Klay Thompson who are considering changing teams. Maybe the most intriguing free agent of all may be 20-time All-NBA megastar LeBron James.

While some outlets have speculated that James will wait to see where his son Bronny is drafted before picking what will likely be his final team, perhaps King James tries to form one last super team. If LeBron chooses to team up with Wemby in San Antonio, maybe he can talk a pure shooter like Thompson into joining him there. No matter what happens, the rest of the league is surely sitting on pins and needles while they wait to find out.
