Eagles Win On Sunday Sets A Franchise Milestone
The Eagles set a new milestone on Sunday with their win over the Detroit Lions. It was the franchise’s 600th win in their 89-year history.
Eagles’ New Milestone
The Philadelphia Eagles became the seventh team in NFL history to reach the 600-win club. They are behind the Bears, Packers, Giants, Steelers, Commanders, and Rams. Four of those teams are older than the Eagles with the Steelers being established the same year as Philadelphia (1933) and the Rams being established four years after the Eagles. The Eagles are now 23 wins over the next closest team which is the Arizona Cardinals at 577 wins.
600 wins brings the Eagles all-time record to 600-627-27. This .489-win percentage ranks 21st out of the 32 NFL teams. The Green Bay Packers, Dallas Cowboys, and New England Patriots have the three highest win percentages. The three lowest win percentages belong to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Arizona Cardinals.
The 89-year history has been up and down for the Eagles. The team found early success winning three championships in their first few decades of existence (1948, 1949, and 1960). Philadelphia then struggled through the 1960s and 1970s following the merger of the NFL and AFL.
The hiring of coach Dick Vermeil brought a new culture to the Eagles in 1976. Philadelphia returned to the playoffs in 1978 and even made a Super Bowl appearance in 1980 but lost to the Raiders. The Eagles had mixed success the remainder of the 1980s and 1990s before the hiring of Andy Reid in 1999.
Coach Andy Reid turned the Eagles from one of the NFL’s most disappointing teams to a contender. The Eagles won 130 games under his tenure which included a Super Bowl appearance and five NFC Championship game appearances. Andy Reid did so much for the Eagles despite not bringing a championship to Philadelphia.
The Eagles finally got over the hump during the 2017 season when the team pulled off a magical season and playoff run to become Super Bowl 52 champions. This was tied for the winningest season in franchise history with 13 regular season wins.
The 600 wins over the course of the team’s 1,254 total games played have been memorable. With a few more years of sustained success, the Eagles can potentially get back to an all-time winning record.
Eagles’ Next Steps
Since the beginning of the millennium, the Eagles have mostly been a contender. The 600-win milestone marks another step in the journey as the Eagles pursue another championship. Philadelphia is a loaded team for the 2022 season and beyond.
The win over the Lions showed that some of the offseason acquisitions can be stars for the team. Linebacker Kyzir White tipped a pass leading to an interception return while wide receiver A.J. Brown showed why he is one of the NFL’s best receivers. Quarterback Jalen Hurts had a good day while the running game was strong as usual. This win hopefully can jumpstart a successful 2022 season for the team.
