Eagles Make Another Strategic Contract Extension
In another major deal this offseason, the Philadelphia Eagles have secured wide receiver DeVonta Smith with a three-year contract extension worth $75 million. He is now under contract through the 2028 season. This extension not only reaffirms Smith’s status as one of the league’s premier talents but also reflects the Eagles’ commitment to building a formidable team around their young core.
Smith, who has been with the Eagles since being drafted 10th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, has quickly established himself as a key player in the team’s offense. Known for his smooth route-running and reliable hands, Smith has become a favorite target for quarterback Jalen Hurts, contributing significantly to the team’s aerial attack.
The Eagles Offense Should Be Elite For Years To Come.
A formidable offensive line, quarterback Jalen Hurts, running back Saquon Barkley, tight end Dallas Goedert, and wide receiver A.J. Brown in addition to Smith make Philadelphia one of the more talented offenses in the league. Assuming everyone stays healthy, the Philly offense could be elite much like they were in 2022 when they nearly knocked off the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl.
Smith's extension, which includes $51 million guaranteed, positions him as one of the highest-paid wide receivers in the NFL. At just 25 years old, he has already amassed 240 receptions for 3,178 yards and 19 touchdowns, boasting an impressive average of 13.2 yards per reception. His performance has been particularly noteworthy given the presence of A.J. Brown, with whom Smith forms one of the most explosive wide receiver duos in the league.
Teammate A.J. Brown lauded Smith’s work ethic and impact on the field, stating, "He is a great receiver, always prepared and he works so hard on his craft. He does things that you see and you just go, ‘Did he just make that catch?’". It's nice to see such high praise from another elite talent on the team who competes with Smith for targets.
The Eagles’ front office, led by Howie Roseman, has been strategic in retaining homegrown talent, and Smith’s extension is a testament to this approach. Earlier in the offseason, the Eagles signed offensive guard Landon Dickerson and left tackle Jordan Mailata to lucrative deals, ensuring the team’s key positions are secured for the foreseeable future.
It's great to see the investment of talent by the team. Smith has been a very effective player and should continue to be one of the league's best for years to come.
