DK To PA: Should The Eagles Trade For Metcalf?
Over the last few years, the Eagles’ receiving corps has been mediocre at best. Sure, the Eagles were able to get DeVonta Smith in the 2021 NFL Draft. However, Philly has passed on game-changing players in recent drafts, such as Justin Jefferson and DK Metcalf.
With news breaking that Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson has been traded to the Denver Broncos, it seems like Seattle is having a sale. Rumors around the league are that DK Metcalf is on the trading block as well.
With the Eagles needing help at the wide receiver position, should Howie Roseman make a call over to Seattle? Why should the Eagles consider trading for Metcalf?
The One That Got Away
Metcalf was drafted by the Seahawks in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft, and was the 64th overall selection. Just seven picks earlier, the Eagles drafted J.J. Arcega-Whiteside. Fast forward to today, it is easy to see that the Eagles missed out on premium talent. Comparing the careers of these two young receivers is honestly laughable.
In Arcega-Whiteside’s career, he has a total of 16 receptions, 290 yards, and one touchdown. A very drastic difference when looking at Metcalf’s 216 receptions, 3,170 yards, and 29 touchdowns so far in his career. It is mind-blowing that the 6’4″, 235lbs. “Freak of Nature,” was ignored by the Eagles’ front office during the 2019 NFL Draft.
Metcalf has made the Eagles pay for not drafting him. In three career matchups against the Eagles, Metcalf has 20 receptions for 372 yards and one touchdown. The young wideout has ranked fifth in receiving touchdowns, 10th in receiving yards, and 17th in receptions since 2019.
What Will It Cost?
With Wilson being traded out of Seattle, it would appear that the Seahawks are in rebuilding mode. So, what do teams need to acquire when beginning a rebuild? The simple answer is draft picks. Draft picks are the perfect currency to acquire players from a rebuilding team.
Michael-Shawn Dugar from The Athletic, wrote: “Seattle would have no problem finding someone willing to give up a first-round pick – perhaps an early one – for the right to acquire Metcalf and sign him to an extension that pays him like one of the best players at his position (about $22 million per year).”
With the Eagles having three first-round picks in the 2022 NFL Draft, they are in a good position to begin talks with Seattle. The Eagles have the 15th, 16th, and 19th overall pick in the draft. With having such early picks, one of them could be very enticing to Seattle.
Redemption?
General Manager Howie Roseman was able to see what Metcalf could do for the last three years. Roseman might be having regrets in not drafting Metcalf back in 2019. Could Roseman redeem himself with a trade with Seattle, acquiring the young wideout?
DK Metcalf lining up across from DeVonta Smith sounds pretty amazing. Eagles fans might have to pinch themselves to make sure they are not dreaming if this becomes a reality.
This being the last year on Roseman’s contract as General Manager, will he decide to roll the dice? Will Roseman pick up the phone and make a call to Seattle?
