Did The Eagles Get The Biggest Steal Of The 2024 NFL Draft?

The Philadelphia Eagles addressed multiple team needs in the 2024 NFL Draft. One of their most notable picks was the guy they got at 22 overall. Somehow, the best cornerback in the draft, Quinyon Mitchell out of Toledo was still available. In a position that teams crave to go up against some of the best receivers in the league, Philly had their choice of their top corner in the entire draft.

Philadelphia does have two veteran corners in Darius Slay and James Bradberry, but Mitchell’s arrival brings much-needed depth and skill to the Eagles’ secondary. His journey to Philadelphia is worth exploring.

What Does Mitchell Bring To The Eagles?

Mitchell, a 6-foot, 195-pound corner, was a consensus top-two cornerback prospect entering the draft.

  • Despite his talent, he fell to the Eagles at No. 22, making him an enticing steal for Philadelphia.

  • Eagles Executive Vice President and General Manager Howie Roseman emphasized Mitchell’s character, talent, and position as key factors in their decision to draft him.

  • Mitchell spent four seasons at Toledo, playing 46 games (40 starts).

  • His stats include 6 interceptions, 2 interceptions returned for touchdowns, 122 tackles, 46 passes defended, and 6.5 tackles for loss.

  • In 2022, he led the FBS with 25 passes defended and set a program record for most passes defended.

  • Notably, Mitchell became the only FBS player since at least 2000 to record four-plus interceptions and two-plus interceptions returned for touchdowns in a single game.

  • Mitchell received individual accolades, including 2nd-Team Associated Press All-American (2023) and 1st-Team All-MAC honors.

  • Head Coach Nick Sirianni, who has a close relationship with Mitchell’s former coach at Toledo, Jason Candle, vouched for Mitchell’s character and work ethic.

  • During the pre-draft process, Mitchell impressed at the Senior Bowl and showcased his speed with a 4.33-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Overall, the Eagles get incredible value getting the top corner in the draft at the 22nd pick of the draft. It will be interesting to see what kind of contributions he makes in 2024.
