Detroit Lions Fantasy Football Week One Starts and Sits

Fantasy Football drafts have wrapped up and the season is ready to kick off this Sunday. The Detroit Lions have a surprising amount of valuable fantasy football targets this year, here are some starts and sits on the Lions roster for Week One.

The Lions are more excited than any team to start the season against the Eagles. Many Lions players are higher-end starters this year, especially in the receiving game. Some of them are going to be great starters in this week’s matchup, while others will be bad matchups. Here are the best and worst bets for Lions players this week.

Starts- TJ Hockenson, Lions Tight End

D’andre Swift, Lions Running Back

TJ Hockenson on his own is one of the best and more consistent tight ends in the NFL. The Philadelphia Eagles improved their defense from last year, but their linebackers remain mediocre. Ben Johnson will likely look to capitalize on this and focus the passing game on the big-bodied tight end. With the Lions having so much depth at receiver the Eagles will likely look to focus on shutting them down, opening up the passing game for the tight ends. Along with that, since the Lions have such a good offensive line and running backs the play-action game will likely be heavily run and will favor Hockenson a lot.

D’andre Swift was one of the top drafted running backs in all fantasy leagues this year and for good reason, he can do it all when it comes to fantasy. For most fantasy leagues, pass-catching is the most important aspect for points, and D’andre Swift does it just as well as anyone.

Swift is in a good position to catch many passes this week because the Eagles improved their defensive line, also with Halapoulivaati Vaitai out and Frank Ragnow questionable for the game, Goff will be under a lot of pressure and will likely dump the ball off to Swift a lot. Not to mention he is still a dominant threat in the run game, he is an ideal start this week.

Sits- DJ Chark, Lions Wide Receiver

DJ Chark was one of the players who seems like a fantasy steal in drafts, going around pick 115 on average. Chark has the upside to be a starting receiver in fantasy leagues, whether it’s in the flex or WR2 due to what he brings to the Detroit Lions offense.  However, this game is not a favorable matchup for Chark because of the Eagles’ much-improved secondary. Chark’s biggest strength is his deep threat ability and Chark is going to have to deal with Darius Slay and Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, which will make it a struggle for him to get open.

The Lions’ offensive line is a little banged up, which won’t help Chark because Goff will likely be under a lot of pressure. If Goff is under a lot of pressure, he’ll have to get rid of the ball quickly and Chark’s routes won’t develop in time. Plus, he still has to compete with Amon-Ra St. Brown for targets, which St. Brown has shown that he will be the guy for Goff moving on. So, while Chark can still have a good game, this matchup doesn’t really favor it.
