Could The Commanders Make This Shocking Move?

The Commanders have shown a lot of interest in Caleb Williams, but signs point to the Bears taking him. Could the Commanders pivot their quarterback search and go for Justin Fields, and draft Marvin Harrison Jr with the second pick?

Elite Receiving Core

The Commanders have a lot of needs, and the receiver isn't exactly their biggest need. They already have Terry McLaurin and Jahan Dotson, but the chance of adding a generational wide receiver like Marvin Harrison Jr should be looked at seriously. Harrison is as good of a prospect the NFL has ever seen, and he's almost a lock to become an elite receiver. If the Commanders drafted him they would have a trio of MHJ, McLaurin, and Dotson with Kliff Kingsbury's air raid scheme.

The Commanders have a dire need of an offensive line, so a more practical option would be to trade down a few spots and take Joe Alt. However, the Commanders could also use free agency and the later part of the draft to solve their issue and prioritize star power. The Commanders are top five in cap space, and can certainly make aggressive pushes for almost anyone on the market.

By drafting Marvin Harrison Jr, the Commanders have one of the best, if not the best wide receiver trios in the entire NFL.

Great Situation For Any Quarterback To Thrive

The Commanders could still take Drake Maye as their franchise quarterback, but a flier on Justin Fields could be a good idea if the organization isn't sold on Maye. As mentioned earlier, Washington is top five in cap space. They can fix their offensive line and defense through free agency, or later in the draft. Assuming the Commanders fix their offensive line too, a wide receiver core of MHJ, McLaurin, and Dotson, along with a competent offensive line is a great situation for any quarterback.

If Fields doesn't work out, the Commanders can take their guy in next year's draft. When drafting a quarterback, the situation they enter is almost as important as the quarterback themselves. If Washington decides not to draft a quarterback early, they can create an elite situation for their future quarterback.
