Could Russell Wilson Find A New Home With This NFC Team?
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had a surprising 2023 season. The team finished 9-8 securing the NFC South division title and even won a playoff game over the defending NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles. One of the biggest reasons for the team's improvement was because of former first-overall pick Baker Mayfield, who signed with the team in the off-season. The 28-year-old will now enter free agency and his market value is expected to be around $27 million dollars per year. With superstar players in Mike Evans and Antoine Winfield Jr also entering free agency, there is a slight chance Baker Mayfield might sign elsewhere with Tampa Bay going cheaper at quarterback. Could the Buccaneers swap out Mayfield for Russell Wilson?
Why A Russell Wilson For Baker Mayfield Swap Makes Sense
The Denver Broncos had a rough ending with Wilson and are expected to part ways this offseason. This leaves room for the Buccaneers to sign Russ. While he made $39 million this past year, the value of Wilson won't be as high as previous years, which benefits Tampa Bay. If they can convince him to sign a cheaper contract, for example around $17-20 million, the Bucs can use that extra ten million to make sure Evans and Winfield Jr stay in Tampa while hoping Wilson can return to his former elite status.
While fans may be upset with this idea, Mayfield and Wilson were not that different in terms of stats last season. Mayfield started 17 games and threw for 4,044 yards, 28 touchdowns and ten interceptions. He added 163 yards and one rushing touchdown on the ground and went 9-8. Meanwhile Wilson threw for 3,070 yards, 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He added 341 yards and three touchdowns and went 7-8 in 15 games played.
While this proposal has little chance of happening, it is interesting to explore what could happen if the Tampa Bay Buccaneers sign Russell Wilson. But in the end, Mayfield and Tampa Bay belong together and hopefully both sides can work on a deal to keep #6 in The Bay for years to come.
