Could Amari Cooper Come To The Eagles?

The Dallas Cowboys are likely to release wide receiver Amari Cooper. This was reported by Adam Schefter on Friday 3/4/22.

The main reason is financial. He is due $20 million this upcoming season and the Cowboys are trying to cut salary. Amari Cooper would become a free agent and could be perfect for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Cooper’s NFL Career

The Raiders drafted Cooper fourth overall in 2015. He played college football at the University of Alabama. During his first year, Cooper set franchise records for receptions and yards by a rookie. He made the NFL Top 100 current players list the following season. Cooper had over 1,100 receiving yards and five touchdowns in 2016. He struggled in 2017 due to injuries but played well again in 2018.

Amari Cooper was traded to the Dallas Cowboys halfway through the 2018 season. In a game against the Eagles, he had 217 receiving yards and the game-winning touchdown in overtime. Cooper had over 1,100 receiving yards in 2019 and again in 2020. This past season was a down year for him, but Cooper still had over 800 yards and eight touchdowns. Through his first seven years in the NFL, Amari Cooper was named to four Pro Bowls.

Is Cooper A Good Fit In Philly?

The Philadelphia Eagles need more production at the wide receiver position. They have had opportunities to draft potential elite receivers in DK Metcalf and Justin Jefferson but missed. The guys they took instead have not panned out (JJ Arcega-Whiteside and Jalen Reagor). Both guys were given a chance but did not deliver.

The Eagles drafted Devonta Smith in 2021 and he showed a lot of promise. He has the potential to be their number one guy. Smith set several Eagles’ rookie records by having 916 receiving yards and five touchdowns. Outside of his production, the wide receiver group struggled. The Eagles will once again be looking to upgrade the WR position through free agency or the draft.

Bringing in Amari Cooper would help solidify the Eagles’ offense as one of the better ones in the NFC. They have a dual-threat quarterback in Jalen Hurts. The Eagles have an elite offensive line, a versatile running game, and a very good tight end in Dallas Goedert. Cooper paired with Smith would make it difficult for defenses to defend these 2 former Alabama receivers.

Amari Cooper would help make Jalen Hurts better. Hurts had a decent season in 2021 but struggled in part due to a lack of talent around him. Receivers were not getting open, and dropped passes became a recurring problem. Cooper would immediately become the number one receiver and Devonta Smith would be number two. This will help open up the field for Hurts to make better throws or gain yards with his legs.

Cooper’s Cost

Amari Cooper would come at a huge cost for the Eagles. His 2020 Cowboys contract included $60 million in guaranteed money over five years. The Eagles would have to come close to this as Cooper would be in high demand. This offseason, the Eagles are expected to have $18 million in cap space. This is enough to bring in Amari Cooper, but they would not have much money left. The Eagles would have to use their draft picks to fill other holes.

In Conclusion

The Philadelphia Eagles should make the move to bring in Amari Cooper. He’s only 28 years old and has much of his career left. Cooper would make an immediate impact to the Eagles offense. He would come at a cost, but the results would be worth it.
