Commanders Sign Three, Release Four In Flurry Of Roster Moves

Commanders Make Roster Moves

While Washington officially had a day off from training camp practice Sunday, the team made several roster moves. According to multiple sources, they released four players and signed three others as the team made some adjustments to their depth chart.

None of the players the Commanders released were really in competition to make the final roster as all four were undrafted college prospects.

Commanders Sign LB Nathan Gerry

Nathan Gerry has started 22 games over the course of his four-year career. He’s also been out of football since Week 8 of the 2020 season after being injured the week before against the New York Giants.

Gerry, 27, has never been that great of a coverage linebacker, he graded out poorly in his last three seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles according to PFF, who had him graded in the 40s in two of his four years. After getting cut during camp last year by the 49ers, Gerry was out of football last season.

During his time at Nebraska Gerry played both safety and linebacker which is interesting considering the team is still looking for someone to play the buffalo nickel position, which is literally a hybrid safety/LB role.

Commanders Sign Safety Steven Parker

Safety Steven Parker (6-1, 210 lbs) has spent time with the Cowboys, Giants, Dolphins, Rams, and Vikings. Parker suited up in nine games for New York last season and played in three.

Parker, 26, had the most success during his time in Miami starting four games and making two interceptions. He’s struggled to catch on anywhere since.

Washington Signs TE Eli Wolf

Eli Wolf, 25, was originally signed by the Baltimore Ravens after going undrafted in 2020. Wolf also has the distinction of playing for two different Southeastern Conference teams in both the University of Tennessee and Georgia, respectively.

After spending his entire rookie season on the practice squad and injured reserve, Wolf was released by the Ravens and signed by the Colts, and spent the 2021 season on their practice squad. The Colts released him earlier this year, and the Packers signed him off waivers and then released him back at the end of July.

The Four Players They Released

Among those released was quarterback Cole Kelley, who was never a threat to make the roster, but most thought the team would keep him around and put him on the practice squad. The move means Washington has faith in rookie Sam Howell as the team’s third-string signal caller.

The team also released LB Bryce Notree, G Tyrese Robinson, and WR Jequez Ezzard who they released with an injury designation. If Ezzard is not claimed he’ll revert back to Washington’s injured reserve list.
