Terry McLaurin Finally Gets His Extension
The Washington Commanders have signed star wide receiver Terry McLaurin to a three-year extension. The early details of the contract have McLaurin getting three years and up to $71 million with $53 million guaranteed. The deal will put a signing bonus of $28 million in McLaurin’s pocket as of today.
For Washington, this is the best news of the offseason and has been highly anticipated by all parties involved, including the fans.

The extension for McLaurin is well deserved. In his three years with Washington, he’s hauled in 222 catches for 3090 yards to go along with 16 touchdowns. In those three years, he’s also caught passes from eight different quarterbacks (it’ll be nine come Week 1).
Just the fact that he’s been able to do well, much less excel while having to deal with multiple signal-callers throwing the ball his way is evidence enough that this kid is special and has a bright future.
This extension will keep Terry in burgundy and gold until 2025 since the team already had him under contract for 2022 (the last year of his rookie deal). The deal will also give the 26-year-old McLaurin a shot at another extension somewhere near his 30th birthday.
While the extension will pay him an average of $23.7 million annually, the new monetary hit won’t count against the salary cap until next season when the ever-rising cap is set to go way up. The average per year total puts him among the top five highest-paid wide receivers in all of football. Definitely a strong sign from Washington on how much the football team values his services.

McLaurin sat out the team’s offseason practices and mini-camp activities that involved on-field contact and drills while waiting on the extension. No one should fault McLaurin for that as an injury could have placed his entire financial future in peril with no guaranteed money on the table.
While McLaurin missed some key practice time with new Commanders quarterback Carson Wentz, head coach Ron Rivera didn’t seem too worried.
“My thoughts and my only concern is that we continue to work, continue to have a dialogue. We’re not going anywhere with Terry. We want Terry to be here. Terry’s a big part of what we want to do and accomplish as a football team. So we’re doing everything we can and we’ll continue to work with it and try and get Terry here to be part of our football team. “That’s not a big concern for a couple reasons. One, Terry is a professional and so is Carson. They’ll get their time and opportunity to work together once we get into training camp. I believe that.”

Wentz appeared to take to the system fairly quickly and showed signs of forming a relationship with several of his new teammates. When he was asked about McLaurin it seemed the two had already connected away from the practice field.
“For sure. I’ve spoken with Terry quite a bit. We’ve been around him a couple times already. Excited for when we do get back out on that field together. Everybody knows what he brings to the table, and I’ve now been watching film and seeing different things and seeing him just continue to make play after play. The dynamic he brings will just elevate us. There’s no doubt about it. He’s an extremely talented guy and a great, great person I’ve already learned, and a hardworking guy. So I know he’ll be ready to go when that time is.”
The Commanders greatly improved their receiving weapons this offseason by drafting WR Jahan Dotson out of Penn State. Add to that the fact that WR Curtis Samuel is now healthy, and this is a group that will make a fully extended and happy Terry McLaurin hard to double team next season. Not to mention making Wentz feel as comfortable as possible with all those weapons surrounding him.
