Commanders Sign CB De’Vante Bausby, Workout Three Others

Commanders Sign De’Vante Bausby

The Washington Commanders worked out several defensive backs Wednesday as the team looked to fill an open roster spot. That spot was left vacant when linebacker Drew White was waived with an injury designation after tearing his ACL Tuesday at practice.

White was an undrafted linebacker out of Notre Dame and was a long shot to make the team.

The four players the Commanders worked out were Brian Allen, De’Vante Bausby, Donte Deayon, and Raleigh Texada. Washington signed Bausby according to several reports on Twitter.

Bausby (6-2, 190 lbs), has spent time with the Bears, Chiefs, Eagles, Patriots, Broncos, and Cardinals, but most recently played for the New Jersey Generals of the United States Football League. He’s started six games in 26 appearances and has 60 tackles during his time in the NFL.

Bausby also now holds the distinction of being the only person to ever play for both the San Antonio & Washington Commanders since he played for the aforementioned during his time in the now-defunct AAF.

Interest In Another LB?

Commanders Head Coach Ron Rivera sounded as if he liked the team’s options at linebacker after losing White to injury. Beyond LBs Cole Holcomb, Jamin Davis, and Khaleke Hudson, Washington also has David Mayo, De’Jon Harris, Milo Eifler, Tre Walker, and Bryce Notree at the position on the roster.

“We’re looking at a couple of options right now and, we’re actually very pleased with what we’ve seen from the young guys. We’ll continue to go through these things with the scouts right now. I’ve been talking to [Senior Director of Player Personnel] Eric [Stokes], about what our plan is and what we’re going to look at.”

Rivera was asked Tuesday about his thoughts on LB Jamin Davis’ progression through camp. It was very clear Rivera likes what he’s seen so far.

“Very happy with it. You see a lot of good and positive things from Jamin right now. He’s much more comfortable with what we’re doing and how we’re doing it. He’s picked up the way we do things in terms of reads and drops. Reading through his drops and understanding the concepts is really big and he’s done a nice job with that. So very pleased with that. As with [LB] Cole [Holcomb], he has done a nice job stepping into the Mike [MLB] position from the start. Last year he was more a Will [OLB] for us. Then when JB [form Washington LB Jon Bostic] got injured we moved him to the Mike [MLB] and he really showed very well. Now’s an opportunity to work on that skill set and he’s done a very good job. When [LB David] Mayo’s gotten his opportunity. Dave’s a big physical guy. Today was a good day for Dave. We did a lot of our big defensive stuff. So he got an opportunity.”
