Commanders Release Two, Place Chase Young On PUP, Two Others on Reserve

With cut day number two going on all around the NFL, teams are lowering their roster totals from 85 to 80. Let’s take a look at what moves Washington made to get down to where they needed to be.

The Washington Commanders made several roster moves Tuesday as the team lowered their roster total from 85 to 80 players to get under the total mandated by the NFL. The next cut day will be next Tuesday, August 30th when they’ll have to cut things back from 80 to 53.

During the first sets of cuts, the team utilized the reserve system to move a couple of injured players into a position where they might return to the team later on down the road. Much of the same was on display this time around as well.

Commanders Release Two Players

Washington released receiver Kelvin Harmon and offensive tackle Rashod Hill. For Harmon, this is not the first time on the cut block, but at this point, you have to wonder if it’s the last. Sadly, Harmon was once viewed as a guy with a lot of upside coming out of NC State.

Injuries really placed a roadblock in his path, and now he keeps getting caught at the bottom of the depth chart where a lot of competition is at this year.

We have made multiple roster moves: Placed the following players on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform List: C Tyler Larsen DE Chase Young Released the following players: WR Kelvin Harmon T Rashod Hill Placed LB Nathan Gerry on the Reserve/Injured List — Washington Commanders (@Commanders) August 23, 2022

The team also placed two other players, linebacker Nathan Gerry on the reserve/injured list (ending his season), and center Tyler Larson on the physically unable to perform list (PUP). Gerry was viewed as a bottom three roster player on the cusp this year.

Chase Young On The PUP

Most everyone knew that Chase Young’s comeback was going to at least be delayed until week two, now we know it won’t happen anytime before Week 5 against the Tennessee Titans. The team moved the third-year defensive end to the physically unable to perform list (PUP), meaning he’s ineligible for the first four weeks of the season.

Ron Rivera had this to say after practice Tuesday:

“As we go through this, it’s hard to predict recovery time. This injury was a little bit more severe than the average one is. Because of that, the timeline is a little bit longer. What is that timeline? I can’t tell you.”

Reports have stated that Young is actually doing well in his comeback, but that the timeline was never fully known to begin with because “you never know.”

Full Chase Young update, per a source: ACL surgery was more significant than most because he also suffered a fully ruptured patella — which is why he’s starting out on reserve PUP. Impressive all-around recovery: #Commanders plan for Young’s return Week 5 vs #Titans. — Jordan Schultz (@Schultz_Report) August 23, 2022

Logan Thomas had this to say when asked about Young’s injury back in April.

“He was a month ahead of me, but his surgery was a little different than mine. He had to transplant his patella [tendon] from his other knee, so it’s a little bit different. He had to rehab both of his legs a little bit. We’re pretty close to the same [timeline].”

For Thomas, his patella tendon was not impacted by the injury he suffered, so doctors “spliced it” and used it to rebuild his injured ACL.

During the time Young is expected to miss, some other defensive linemen are going to have to step it up. The pressure is on for guys like James Smith-Williams and Shaka Toney to disrupt things opposite of Montez Sweat. And not just those two guys, the entire defense has to play better, especially on third downs.

Sweat himself will also have to step things up heading into his fourth season…the team needs big things from him in 2022. In the meantime, we’ll have to wait and see what the scheme produces.
