College Baseball Preview: Vanderbilt Commodores Vs. Belmont Bruins
Although game time has moved due to inclement weather, the Vanderbilt Commodores will still face off against Belmont Bruins. The Vanderbilt Commodores are on a double digit win streak and hope to continue that streak before they meet South Carolina for a three game weekend series.
The Commodores went 4-0 last week and were led by Tate Kolwyck and freshman Carter Holton. Kolwayck recently received the SEC Player of the Week honor while Holton received the SEC Co-Freshman of the Week. Why is this important? Vanderbilt has proven time and time again that they are a pipeline for above average baseball talent.
Belmont lost two of three in their weekend series against Wofford marking their third straight weekend series loss. The Bruins have yet to face a Top 50 team this year and have struggled with teams ranked in the 51-100 RPI range (2-4). On the other hand, Vanderbilt is 4-0 against Top 25 teams ensuring a recipe for disaster in regards to the Belmont squad.
Belmont sophomore outfielder Guy Lipscomb is a name to watch. Lipscomb has burst onto the scene after a pedestrian 2021 saw him hit .259/.328/.612 with 14 stolen bases and three doubles. Through 21 games in 2022, Lipscomb has improved his slash line to .392/.478/.532 surpassing his stole base total (19) and homerun total (1) from the previous year.
Shortstop Carter Young has turned his game around and returned to 2020 form. After a solid 2020 (.328/.373/.377), Young suffered in 2021 due to injuries (.252/.341/.559). In 2022, fully healthy, Young has hit .313/.439/.597 with four doubles, three triples and three homeruns. The power is not where it was last year but it is not concerning, yet, due to Young’s previous shoulder injury.
