Cleveland Browns Training Camp: 6 Important Takeaways

We are more than a week into training camp, and some news has already occurred. With a pre-season Week One matchup looming with the Jacksonville Jaguars, now is a necessary time to take stock of everything that has transgressed over the last ten days of training camp. Roster battles, depth chart breakdowns, and unfortunate injuries have all occurred in Berea, Ohio. We will summarize the critical Cleveland Browns training camp news and notes.

Greg Newsome At Nickel

Greg Newsome will be the slot corner. Veteran Troy Hill was traded back to the Los Angeles Rams in April for a fifth-round draft pick. Many surmised that this move was with the confidence of Newsome. He played 72 slot snaps during his rookie season, where opposing quarterbacks targeted him only 13 times. Last season, he finished second amongst all rookie corners in pass break-ups, and PFF had him graded as their second-best corner.

Michael Woods Looking Good, But Injured

The wide-receiver room for the Browns has seen a complete transformation from this time last year. Gone are Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry, who Amari Cooper and seemingly no one will replace. Jakeem Grant signed with the team, but mainly as a return specialist. Donovan-Peoples Jones and Anthony Schwartz remain on the roster from last season. The draft saw the addition of two rookies, David Bell in the third round and Michael Woods in the sixth. So far, Woods has been outplaying his draft pedigree. He recently re-aggravated a hamstring injury that initially occurred in the spring. The team hopes he won’t be missing too much time.

Anthony Schwartz, Should We Be Concerned?

Schwartz was a third-round draft selection in the 2021 NFL draft, primarily based on his speed. Unfortunately, he was drafted as a burner but has delivered little to warrant the draft capital. He had minimal production in his time at Auburn, although that may have been very quarterback dependent. He could only accumulate 23 targets in his rookie season while also missing three games. In addition, Schwartz is now beginning Cleveland Browns training camp with a knee injury. The roster bubble may be fast approaching.

Defense Dominating The Offense

A big takeaway from many of the live-action portions of training camp has been the defensive domination over the offense. On one recent red-zone drill, it took the offense 20 attempts to get the ball across the goal line. The offense has more new pieces than the defense. As we get closer to Week One, this gap will slim.

Jordan Elliot Stepping Up When Needed

Defensive tackle is one area of great weakness for the 2022 Cleveland Browns defense. With all of the moves made this offseason, the defensive tackle is the one that has received little help. Former first-rounder Taven Bryan signed with the team from Jacksonville, but it is 2020 third-round selection Jordan Elliot that has been stepping up in Cleveland Browns training camp. It would be huge for the defense if he could earn a role as a week-to-week starter.

Battle For Outside Corner Opposite Ward

With Greg Newsome filling in the slot role, there is a hole at CB2 playing on the opposite side of the field as Denzel Ward. Often-injured Greedy Williams, rookie Martin Emerson Jr, and former UDFA A.J. Green are all in the running for the job. Greedy has always been a talented player; he has had trouble staying on the field. Reports have Martin Emerson and A.J. Green impressing the coaching staff during Cleveland Browns training camp. With the history of the position in Cleveland, depth is never a bad thing to have.
