Cleveland Browns Post-Game: 5 Takeaways From Preseason Week Two
The second preseason game for the 2022 Cleveland Browns is in the books. What are some of the key takeaways that will affect this roster as we approach the final 53?
Week two of the NFL preseason did not end the way the first week did for the Cleveland Browns. The Philadelphia Eagles came to First Energy for the first Sunday of Browns football since the end of the 2021 season. It was a close loss of 21 – 20, and if the game had an effect on the standings, I am sure coach Stefanski would have approached it differently. All that matters is we have to see some young players show off their best skills in front of the hometown crowd. With rosters going from 85 to 80 on Tuesday, every player needed to put their best effort on display.

Dobbs Is A Lock At QB3

Through two preseason games, Josh Dobbs is 24 of 33 for 249 yards and two touchdowns with an additional 56 yards on the ground. He has been everything you want out of a backup quarterback, and that might just be the role he is fighting for. Despite playing against mostly second-string players, he has to instill confidence in the coaching staff. Outside of any possible starting quarterback moves, Dobbs should be a lock for the “backup” quarterback role this year.
Tony Fields/Richie LeCounte Dynamic Duo
Tony Fields and Richard LeCounte are considered “third-string” at their positions. Most of these players saw most of their snaps on special teams last season but are looking to be next in line as “backups” at the linebacker/safety position. They both have dynamic players in front of them but provide depth at crucial positions. Breakout seasons for either or both would be tremendous for the 2022 Cleveland Browns.
Run Game Remains King

The Cleveland Browns and running the football name a more iconic duo in the NFL. Whether it is Nick Chubb, Kareem Hunt, or John Kelly Jr, the run game remains supreme in Cleveland. The fourth-year player from Tennessee was able to average 4.7 yards per carry and looked dynamic on the field. He is a long shot at making the final roster with such a talented running back room under contract, but he put some good tape on the record for his next potential job. Just further proof that Stefanski has an elite-run scheme.

Defensive Line Getting Worked
Not every takeaway from this Sunday preseason game was positive. The defensive line got worked for 144 rushing yards and 24 first downs. They couldn’t buy a third down stop. This Eagles team is very deep along the offensive line. That is no excuse for the performance of our second-team defensive line. Many of these players will be looking to redeem themselves next weekend against the Bears.
