Chiefs Sign Justin Reid: Initial Reactions
The Chiefs landed their first huge free agency signing last night. They have signed former Houston Texans’ safety Justin Reid to a three-year, $31.5 million deal with $20 million guaranteed. In 2021, Reid played 13 games where he had 66 combined tackles, two interceptions, four passes defended, and a forced fumble:

Here are my initial reactions to this breaking news:
Justin Reid = Getting Younger And Cheaper
Last month, Reid celebrated his 25th birthday, meaning the Chiefs will have him locked down for his critical prime years. Tyrann Mathieu will be 30 by the time next season starts; furthermore, he’s expected to have a market value of around $15 million per Spotrac. While it hurts to see Mathieu go, he’s just too much money for the Chiefs at this time with taking his age into account. Signing Reid gives the Chiefs some breathing room in cap space for other key positions while still keeping the secondary in a good place.
As the adage goes, “out with the old, in with the new.” The Chiefs are getting younger overall, and it seems that it’ll stay that way over the course of the next few seasons.

Solid Signing For The Money
Overall, Justin Reid’s signing was solid for the money. Reid showed that he was solid at that end of the spectrum in coverage. Per PFR, Reid was targeted 30 times. In those targets, he allowed 16 completions (53.3% completion rate) for 302 yards and two touchdowns. He allowed an average QB rating of 82.9. Additionally, he had a streak of four games where he didn’t allow a single completion per PFR (Weeks Nine, 11-14). He’s also a solid tackler that can make clean tackles in space.
Overall, Reid had a down year in 2021 compared to his past seasons. However, in a more stable environment like the Chiefs, I feel as though Reid could thrive.
