Chiefs Fan Favorite Has Surgery, Will Miss Time

As training camp kicked off Friday for the Chiefs, some notable injury updates were shared with the media. What’s the news with these key rookies?

Training camp has kicked off for most teams across the NFL and the Chiefs are included within that mix. The team kicked things off in St. Joseph on Friday. As things kicked off, many different tidbits of notable news dropped across Chiefs’ Twitter.

Mahomes made his own waves on Friday when he arrived at camp supporting the local Kansas City Monarchs and rocking a brand new tattoo. He also spoke on the rising quarterback market and how he fits into that piece of the puzzle: “I think I’ve made enough money on and off the football field that it won’t matter at the end of the day.”

Alongside the rage around Mahomes’ new tattoo and his new signature shoe, dropping soon, there was also some very important news around camp regarding a couple of the team’s newest members to its wide receiver corps.

Chiefs’ Rookie Wideouts Are Having Mixed Starts To Their Career

Chiefs rookie wide receiver, Skyy Moore, updates the media on his hamstring injury:

Back in May, when the team hosted its offseason mini-camp, there were a couple of notable injuries to monitor over this offseason. Among those were rookie Skyy Moore and the hamstring injury that held him out of most of mini-camp. Moore, who remained limited through most of camp, reported to the media that he was dealing with a “minor hamstring injury” and was working alongside the Chiefs’ head trainer, Rick Burkholder.

On Friday, with rookies and quarterbacks reporting to training camp in St. Joseph, Moore again spoke with the media regarding his hamstring injury and where he stands now.

According to the report from Pete Sweeney, Editor-in-Chief for SBNation’s Arrowhead Pride, Moore is now feeling 100% and is ready to go for training camp.

Chiefs head coach, Andy Reid, shared some injury news with the media ahead of camp:

With the positive news surrounding Skyy Moore’s injury situation, some other troubling news came out during today’s camp kickoff. Andy Reid, when speaking with the media, shared that Rashad Fenton, Lucas Niang, and Justyn Ross all had surgery and would not be taking part at the beginning of training camp.

It sounds like they will begin on the PUP — Pete Sweeney (@pgsween) July 22, 2022

According to Sweeney, the three will likely start camp on the PUP, putting their status for Week One in question. In the case of Ross, in particular, it’s entirely likely that he stands to miss the bulk of the season — if not the entire season altogether. In reports following the NFL Draft, only four NFL teams cleared Ross to compete. The injury concerns were not a secret and shouldn’t come as a surprise for fans now.

Due to the recovery time needed following his surgery — a foot surgery needed to correct a prior surgery from November of last year — it’s very likely that the Chiefs will look to place Ross on the Injured Reserve. In placing him on IR the team will not need to stash Ross on the practice squad this season and can instead allow him to heal and recuperate without the risk of another team signing him off the practice squad.

The latest updates for Ross certainly aren’t positive but also shouldn’t come as a surprise. He should still get a chance to compete for a role with the Chiefs in due time.
