Chiefs Draft Trent McDuffie: Initial Reactions

With the 21st pick in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs selected cornerback Trent McDuffie.

The Chiefs traded their 29th pick in the first round, 94th pick in the third round, and 121st pick in the fourth round to get a needed outside corner. The AFC West got a lot better offensively this off-season with Russell Wilson going to Denver and Davante Adams joining the Raiders.

At the same time, the Chiefs lost Tyrann Mathieu and Charvarius Ward out of their secondary. Rashad Fenton and LaJarius Sneed are solid corners, but it’s pretty empty in KC behind them. This filled a big need and KC, and here are my initial reactions:

Trent McDuffie Is A Day One Starter

Trent McDuffie will lineup for the Chiefs outside in week one of the 2022 season. McDuffie is just a hair undersized for defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. He usually goes for guys who are six feet minimum, but McDuffie is close enough at 5’11 and 200 pounds.

He is a genius on the field, which more than makes up for his lack of size with his smarts. He is where he needs to be at all times, and that dependability will make him a favorite of Spags. He can throw all the complicated schemes he wants at him, and he’ll soak it up and execute the play as designed.

McDuffie Is Versatile

His smarts, size, and quickness allow him to play anywhere in the secondary. Don’t get me wrong; his home will be on the outside matched up against the other team’s best. But he can slide into the slot if a play calls for it.

He also has the ability to be a thumper for his size. He is not scared of contact and will come off his man to help when plays are happening under him. McDuffie gives me a few flashbacks to the last first-round corner from Washington the Chiefs took in Marcus Peters. He’s a bit undersized, but he loves to make plays and be around the ball. But as I said, unlike Peters, McDuffie will have no problem getting his nose bloody making a hit.

This was a solid pick-up for the Chiefs for sure. Fans wanted wide receiver, and I even asked for Jermain Johnson II. But this pick is a solid pick with an immediate starter at a valuable position of need. This was great trade value, and GM Brett Veach has started this draft off right!
