Baker Mayfield Makes Major Decision On His Free Agency

After being drafted first overall in the 2018 NFL draft by the Cleveland Browns, quarterback Baker Mayfield has had a chaotic six years in the National Football League. After being traded to the Carolina Panthers in 2022 after the Browns decided to part ways in favor of DeShaun Watson, the former Oklahoma Sooner has bounced from Carolina to the Los Angeles Rams and currently the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

But it looks like Mayfield has finally found his home as the former Heisman trophy winner has re-signed with the Buccaneers and will not join another team in free agency. He enters the upper echelon of QB deals with this one - valued at 3 years, $100 million.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Resign Baker Mayfield After Division Champion Season

Baker Mayfield was not expected to do much in Tampa Bay after the retirement of Tom Brady. After being traded from Cleveland after a down-season due to injury despite a talented roster, Mayfield has been a fan-favorite and underdog story in the NFL. Although he was not successful with the Carolina Panthers, he had a good stint with the Rams following his release and brought his talents to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, fresh off a 8-9 season along with an NFC South division title.

Mayfield had a breakout season in Florida throwing for 4,044 yards, a career high, along with 28 touchdown passes and only ten interceptions. His 64% completion rate was also a career-high as well. Mayfield and the Buccaneers finished 9-8 and won the division in a year many thought they could be in the running for potential first-overall pick Caleb Williams.

Alongside a division title, Mayfield also delivered a playoff win over the defending NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles and was pretty close to defeating the Detroit Lions to advance to the NFC Championship Game as well.

Mayfield A Clutch Star During Pivotal Stretch

After starting the season 4-7, it looked like the Falcons or Saints would run away with the division title. But Mayfield led the Buccaneers to a 5-1 record with three wins over division rivals along with dominating wins over Jacksonville Jaguars (9-8) and Green Bay Packers (9-8). During this stretch, Mayfield threw for 11 touchdowns and only three interceptions in six games after starting the season with 17 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He had more 300-yard games during this stretch (2) than he had all season before (1). Baker Mayfield really clutched up when the team needed him most.

He got better in the postseason as well. In two playoff games, Mayfield threw for six touchdowns and only two interceptions. He threw for over 330 yards in each game and averaged 27.5 points with a win and a loss.

While the Buccaneers have many important decisions to make this off-season especially regarding the futures of Antoine Winfield Jr and Mike Evans, the team was very smart by re-signing the 28-year-old quarterback and will be competitive for the near future.
