Are The Giants Focusing on 2023 NFL Draft?

Before Week One has even kicked off, the Giants are looking ahead to next year’s NFL Draft. GM Joe Schoen is on the road scouting players at key positions who could help the team next year and beyond.

The Giants General Manager, Joe Schoen, will be one busy man this season. Before the first game of the 2022 NFL season, Schoen is already out on the road scouting potential quarterbacks in the upcoming 2023 NFL Draft. It’s a sign of things to come and New York is going to be in for a very long season. Daniel Jones is going to be the short-term quarterback, but there are several long-term options for the Giants in 2023.

Notable Names To Watch For The Giants This College Season

Schoen recently scouted Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud against Notre Dame. He completed 70.6% of his passes for 223 yards and two touchdowns. Stroud is one of the names to be taken at the top of the NFL Draft board in 2023. Bryce Young of Alabama is another name that will be taken in the loaded 2023 quarterback draft class. Young, in the first game of the 2022 season against Utah State, completed 64.3% of his passes for 195 yards and five touchdowns. Joe Schoen will probably get to scout him later this season.

Giants scouts were at the Utah Utes vs Florida Gators game this past weekend checking out Anthony Richardson. Richardson has a lot of “wow factor” and his potential in that first game of the season and led Florida to a 29-26 upset win.

He completed 70.8% of his passes for only 168 yards and zero touchdowns. However, Anthony Richardson did not throw an interception and also had 11 rushes for 106 yards rushing and a touchdown. Richardson will be a player that could climb up draft boards throughout the 2022 college football season.

Either Joe Schoen or other New York Giants scouts will be at the Kentucky Wildcats vs Florida Gators football game once again this weekend. Kentucky has another potential quarterback prospect in Will Levis. He is a prototypical-style quarterback. Levis completed 65.6% of his passes for 303 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception.

It will be interesting to see how Schoen decides to rank his quarterbacks in this draft class. He will have several discussions throughout the year with head coach Brian Daboll and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka. The Giants aren’t going to win many games this season and there will be team scouts probably at all of the quarterback’s games this season in the 2023 NFL Draft class.

This is why they are doing their due diligence now on these quarterbacks. At the moment, Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud, Anthony Richardson, and Will Levis are the top four quarterbacks in the 2023 NFL Draft class. A couple of other names to watch for throughout this season are Tyler Van Dyke from Miami (FL), Grayson McCall from Coastal Carolina, and Phil Jurkoevic from Boston College.

The Giants’ General Manager is also busy restructuring contracts because former Dave Gettleman set them up in a bad cap space situation. They had to make defensive lineman Leonard Williams’s 2022 contract into a signing bonus. This is how bad the cap space situation is for them and Joe Schoen has done a great job for that for the New York Giants so far and has a ton of work left to do also.

The onus on the next NFL Draft has a lot of talent defensive players that the Giants could covet, but what if Daniel Jones project for one season is a bust they will be shopping for a new signal caller.
