Alabama Loses One Of Its Most Important Offensive Pieces
Alabama lost the greatest college football coach of all time, Nick Saban, to retirement and hired Washington head coach Kalen DeBoer as their new head coach. DeBoer brought his offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb with him to take over the same role at Alabama, but Grubb will never coach a game for the Tide.
On Friday Night, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that "Seahawks are hiring offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb as their new OC."
Grubb gets to stay in Seattle and move to the NFL level. We saw earlier today Ohio State's new offensive coordinator, Bill O'Brien, left without coaching a single game to be the new head coach at Boston College, and now Grubb will be following the same sort of path O'Brien went down being hired as a new offensive coordinator and take a new job within in a month.
I was shocked that Grubb didn't get a college football head coaching job after what he did with Washington's offense last season. Quarterback Michael Penix was a Heisman favorite, wide receivers Rome Odunze, Jalen McMillan, and Ja'Lynn Polk were the best-receiving core in the country and had the best offensive line in the nation.
It's not easy for DeBoer to replace the greatest coach in college football, and now his offensive coordinator, whom he trusts and works with, leaves him a month after taking the job.
DeBoer is a great coach and very smart, so he should be able to find his offensive coordinator quickly, but at the same time, it's very late in the off-season when it comes to coaching hires. A lot of the top candidates are locked up with other teams.
