A Poetic Farewell For The World's Best Striker

Against the cries and pleas from the fans, Arsenal Women’s Football Club did not offer Vivianne Miedema a contract extension. After seven years, the club released the Women’s Super League’s top goalscorer. While fans cannot offer her a new contract, they offered her their support and love at her final home game at Meadow Park.

Miedema’s Club History

Following The Netherlands victory at the 2017 Women’s Euros, Arsenal signed the Dutch striker, hoping to win their first League title since 2012. While they did not win the 2017-2018 season, she provided 6 goal contributions in 11 games, with four goals and two assists. During the FA Cup, she scored 3 times in 5 appearances and Arsenal won the Continental Cup.

She would shine during the 2018-2019 season when her 32-goal contribution led Arsenal to their third WSL title. She won the Golden Boot this season with 22 goals, and she also had 10 assists. While Arsenal were runners up in the Continental Cup, Miedema provided nine goals in seven games.

The following season would be the start of the UEFA Women’s Champions League, where Vivianne scored 10 goals in five appearances. During the 2019-2020 WSL season, Vivianne scored 16 goals in 14 games and had eight assists.

In the following seasons, she has been plagued by leg injuries, and more recently, she has returned from an ACL tear. While this diminished her output, she has been and will always be a pivotal player for Arsenal.

Her Final Game

Fans packed Meadow Park Stadium with signs of admiration for the Dutch striker. Before the start of the game, the team made an aisle of honor for not only her but teammates Sabrina D’Angelo and Kaylan Marckese, who are also leaving the club.

She was put into the game during the second half and scored a goal with her first touch. She also provided the team with an assist in the 5-0 win against Brighton. She had a tearful farewell with the fans and left the pitch in an Arsenal shirt for the final time.

While nobody knows what Arsenal is planning next for the squad, they have been in talks of “revitalization”. I wish Vivianne Miedema were staying at Arsenal, as she is my favorite modern-day football player, but I hope that wherever she ends up, she returns to her goalscoring form again.
