All offseason leading up to the draft, the Eagles were expected to add a wide receiver to the team. During free agency, the team was rumored to acquire several big-name players however nothing came to fruition. In addition, several mock drafts had the Eagles selecting a top receiver prospect from this year’s class. The Eagles chose neither and somehow struck gold. Arthur Juan Brown, better known as A.J. Brown, is officially a Philadelphia Eagle and the fans couldn’t be happier.
Leading up to the draft and eventual trade there were rumors circulating around A.J. Brown and the possibility of him being moved. Mike Vrabel, the head coach of the Tennessee Titians quickly shut down those rumors but since then something changed.
One unknown fact that was uncovered during the trade is that Brown and Eagles starting quarterback Jalen Hurts are best friends. Hurts had posted a video on social media of him and Brown training together. He apparently followed that up by proposing to Eagles management to make a trade for Brown. We may never know the exact proceedings, however, in the end, A.J. Brown was dealt to the Eagles and everyone in the organization is excited.
Who Is A.J. Brown?
A.J. Brown is a unique specimen at the wide receiver position. There really isn’t another player like him in the NFL. He’s a 6’1 225-pound receiver with strong hands and an incredibly strong base. His ability to run through tackles and make defenders miss is top-notch. His ability to run a slant or deep in and take it to the house is second to none. There’s a term they use when describing A.J. around the league, and it’s very fitting, he is the very definition of a ‘Grown Ass Man”!
Over his first three years in the NFL, Brown is averaging 62 receptions, 998 yards, and 8 touchdowns a season. He’s coming off back-to-back 1000-yard receiving seasons. In addition, Brown was named to the 2019 All Rookie-Team and was a 2020 Pro Bowl selection. A.J. Brown brings a resume and pedigree the Eagles haven’t had since the departure of the Hall of Famer, Terrell Owens.
With the addition of Brown to the offense, the Eagles wide receiving core should drastically improve. The most important aspect will be the trickle-down effect. With Brown as the clear WR1, the team will move DeVonta Smith to the WR2 where he will take on lesser talent and have more freedom to motion at the line. Couple that with the expected accession from Smith and year two should be a good one. Also, this move will allow Quez Watson and/or Jalen Reagor to take the slot role where they can take advantage of mismatches.
