49ers Star Receiver Signs New Deal

Will 49ers star Deebo Samuel break 1,000 rushing yards and receiving yards in 2022? Or will we see a down year despite the new contract?

After months of contract talks, rumors of leaving the team, trade talks and so much more, Deebo is staying in San Fran. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the 49ers utility receiver signed a new three-year, $71.55 million deal with $58.1 million guaranteed. Schefter also reported that the deal has a max value of around $73.5 million likely through incentives/performance-based clauses.

The 49ers needed to make this deal happen, and it is officially done. Samuel is now fully reporting to training camp and beginning to practice. Samuel’s $58.1 million is the second-highest of all time for a wide receiver trailing only Seahawks WR DK Metcalf who just signed a $58.2 million guaranteed deal from the Seahawks. The three-year deal keeps Samuel with the 49ers before he hits the free agent market after the 2025 season, shortly after he turns 30 years old.

Why Signing Deebo Was Important For The 49ers

Since being drafted in the second round of the 2019 draft, Samuel has become a utility player above all else. In his rookie year, he finished with 802 receiving yards, 159 rushing yards, and six total touchdowns. His sophomore season was filled with injuries as he only played seven games that year. But in 2021 he bounced back and showed the 49ers why he is worth the money.

The 2021 season was easily his best considering he finished with 1,405 receiving yards, six receiving touchdowns, 365 rushing yards, and eight rushing touchdowns. That is a grand total of 1,770 total yards from scrimmage. Now that Deebo has his new deal, he will have a chance to replicate his outstanding 2021 season where he earned a First-Team All-Pro nod. If he can repeat last year over the next two seasons, Samuel will be getting a lot more than $58 million guaranteed on his next deal.
