J. B. Bickerstaff continues to impress as head coach of the Detroit Pistons. This team went 14–68 last year. They now comfortably sit with a four-game gap separating them from the seven-seed. A lot of the attention is understandably on Cade Cunningham during this turnaround. One player continues to fly under the radar in large NBA circles. This aspect is changing as a certain veteran player stamps his mark on the now-winning side from Michigan.
It takes all-around contributions during a franchise turnaround. Oftentimes, bringing in experience proves to be pivotal. This includes adding someone like Malik Beasley, who knows and understands their role.
The shooting guard currently owns the top spot in an individual stat category. StatMuse highlighted that the 11-year vet has made the most three-point shots so far this season. His 239 field goals from range even eclipse Steph Curry. The Golden State Warriors’ guard sits at 222 by comparison.
Being able to knock down outside shots grows in importance in today’s spacing era. Beasley doesn’t only chip in points for himself, but his ability also prevents opponents from cheating over to Cunningham too much.
Beasley also helps him out indirectly. Averaging 4.0 treys a game at 44.1% shooting provides an ideal teammate for the aforementioned first-time All-Star. Reliably making these shots gives the Pistons’ cornerstone the support he needs.
Many times, offenses come to a screeching halt when the star goes to the bench. The offense can more than survive with Detroit’s best player taking a breather. Having someone the others can turn to to provide a boost or keep the second unit going continues to reward Coach Bickerstaff’s trust.
A strong case can be made for Beasley to earn the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award. Being recognized as one of the best reserve options is a strong compliment. The former Florida State player is proving to be most deserving of the honor at this point in the season.
Beasley’s impact continues to be an important aspect of winning. Once a laughingstock, the Pistons now appear ready to take on the postseason. They’ll still need to grow to take the next step. Considering Beasley’s play as a non-starter, expect the Pistons player to hear his name called at the upcoming NBA Awards.
The Pistons are on the right track. Cunningham is a future Superstar. In the meantime, Beasley, playing at a high level, will continue to pay dividends. He deserves more praise from the NBA community. Fans shouldn’t be surprised when he walks the stage to accept his 6MOTY award at the conclusion of this season.
