The Philadelphia Phillies have been on an absolute tear after Don Mattingly took over, but they still may not have enough to get to that next level. The MLB trade deadline is inching closer, and the Phillies will need to be aggressive. These are three prospects that Philadelphia could include in some big-time trade packages.
Alex McFarlane has been the best reliever in the Phillies minor leagues this year. He has a 2.12 ERA in 34 innings pitched. His age (25) could limit his true value in a trade, but the production is absolutely major league ready. It is surprising that he hasn’t made the jump to the MLB yet. Maybe the Phillies are preparing to trade him and don’t want to damage any value.
Aroon Escobar is in the middle of a down year at Double-A, but he is still a top prospect in the organization. If the Phillies are targeting a player right under that star tag (like Taylor Ward or Brooks Raley), Escobar would be the most likely candidate to be dealt.
Gage Wood is as big as it gets in the Phillies organization. There is no shot they trade him in a “small” trade, but just in case they go big, he should be monitored. A scenario where Byron Buxton waives his NTC, that’s where Wood could be traded. He was the starter for the NL in the Futures Game and has 79 strikeouts in 55 innings pitched in the minors.
The Phillies can’t sit around at the MLB trade deadline. They need to be aggressive and make some true additions to their lineup or bullpen. To acquire those impact players, they need to give something up. These three prospects have the most value amongst realistic trade candidates in the organization.
