The NFL preseason for a majority of the teams is about to begin, including the Philadelphia Eagles. There are many battles to watch throughout camp and preseason. Players will be fighting hard for the few open spots towards the end of the 53-man roster.

Quarterbacks

(3) Jalen Hurts, Tanner McKee, Kyle McCord

Hurts and McKee will be returning to Philadelphia as the primary quarterbacks. The real battle begins at number three on the depth chart. McCord and Dorian Thompson-Robinson will fight for the final spot. Thompson-Robinson seems like a likely practice squad candidate at this point.

Running Backs

Saquon Barkley

(4) Saquon Barkley, Will Shipley, AJ Dillon, Avery Williams

Barkley will once again carry a heavy workload this season, but he has a new group behind him. With former backup Kenneth Gainwell going to Pittsburgh in free agency, Shipley will be asked to have a bigger role in his second season.

Dillon was signed in free agency to play the power back role behind Barkley and Shipley. Williams is expected to be the return man this season after the team moved on from Britain Covey in the offseason.

Fullback

Ben VanSumeren

(1) Ben VanSumeren

VanSumeren is coming off a major injury after his first season since being transitioned from linebacker to fullback, and he will likely slot back into that role. Khari Blasingame filled this role after VanSumeren’s injury last season, so it’s expected the Eagles will opt to keep the fullback role filled this upcoming season.

Wide Receivers

Devonta Smith

(5) AJ Brown, Devonta Smith, Jahan Dotson, Terrace Marshall, Johnny Wilson

Brown, Smith, and Dotson have the starting jobs locked in once again, but there are some serious battles towards the bottom of the depth chart. Marshall has looked good in camp and would be a good addition to the roster. Wilson showed he can be an impactful player in the red zone during his rookie campaign and will look to continue taking strides to become a reliable receiver.

Tight Ends

Dallas Goedert

(3) Dallas Goedert, Grant Calcaterra, Kylen Granson

Goedert and Calcaterra return as the primary tight ends once again this season, but there is an interesting battle for the third spot. Harrison Bryant and Granson were brought in early in the offseason when Goedert’s contract situation was still up in the air.

Granson, Bryant, and returning practice squad tight end EJ Jenkins will fight for the last spot on the tight end depth chart, but it could all be for nothing. Last season, the Eagles opted to carry only two tight ends on the roster and called up multiple throughout the season when needed.

Offensive Line

Lane Johnson

(10) Jordan Mailata, Landon Dickerson, Cam Jurgens, Tyler Steen. Lane Johnson, Matt Pryor, Trevor Keegan, Drew Kendall, Kenyon Green, Myles Hinton

The starting line is mostly set apart from the right guard. The spot appears to be Steen’s to lose, but recently acquired Green may have something to say about that. Howie Roseman made many depth acquisitions, including Pryor and Kendall Lamb in free agency and Hinton and Cameron Williams in the draft.

The Eagles have some tough decisions to make when it comes to the depth linemen, and Lamb and Williams may be some of the casualties of these decisions. Hinton and Williams were both selected in the sixth round, so their performances in camp and preseason games will heavily impact their fate on the roster.

Defensive Tackles

Jordan Davis

(5) Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis, Moro Ojomo, Ty Robinson, Gabe Hall

Carter, Davis, and Ojomo will return as the core of the interior line after Milton Williams’ departure. Robinson has struggled early in camp, but his high draft position ensures him a spot on the roster, and his potential appears to be extremely high. Hall had his chances of making the roster increased after the Eagles dealt Thomas Booker IV to the Raiders.

EDGE

Nolan Smith

(5) Nolan Smith, Azeez Ojulari, Josh Uche, Jalyx Hunt, Antwaun Powell-Ryland

Smith comes back after an incredible postseason run to anchor the EDGE rotation, and some new additions like Uche and Ojulari will provide nice depth. Hunt will look to carry the momentum gained during the Super Bowl run into next season, where he intends to leap into a starting role. Powell-Ryland was selected in the sixth round this season and nicely fits in as the last roster member from this group.

Linebackers

Zack Baun
Jihaad Campbell

(4) Zack Baun, Jihaad Campbell, Jeremiah Trotter Jr, Smael Mondon Jr.

Nakobe Dean is expected to be on the PUP list to begin the season, so these are expected to be the four linebackers on the opening day roster. Mondon Jr was selected in this year’s draft and will nicely fit on the roster with no other real competition to knock him off.

Cornerbacks

Quinyon Mitchell
Cooper DeJean

(6) Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper Dejean, Kelee Ringo, Adoree Jackson, Mac McWilliams, Jakorian Bennett

Jackson was brought in as competition for Ringo as they fight for the remaining starting spot. The depth here is certainly lacking, but McWilliams could turn into a nice slot corner. After the top two, this is certainly not a great-looking room.

Bennett was acquired from the Raiders in a recent trade, and the former fourth-round pick will provide solid depth to the cornerback room. Eli Ricks is the odd man out here, but after recent high praise from coaches, Ricks may find his way onto the roster.

Safeties

Reed Blankenship

(4) Reed Blankenship, Sydney Brown, Andrew Mukuba, Tristin McCollum

Blankenship is the only sure thing from this group, with many unknowns following him on the depth chart. Brown and second-round pick Mukuba will battle for the second starting spot. McCollum will be on the roster as a depth piece; the only question is how many they will carry. Andre Sam is a good special teams player and could make the roster if someone else is left off.

Special Teams

Jake Elliott (K), Braden Mann (P), Charley Hughlett (LS)

No major changes from this group, apart from long snapper. Longtime Eagle and two-time Super Bowl champion Rick Lovato moved on after nine years with the franchise. Hughlett comes over from Cleveland to fill Lovato’s role.

End Of My Eagles Rant

Justin Simmons

The Eagles’ 2025 roster looks good enough to contend for the Super Bowl once again. The only position where additions may be needed is in the defensive backs room. With the depth looking slim, adding a veteran free agent like Asante Samuel Jr or Justin Simmons may be the key to perfecting the roster.
