The Philadelphia 76ers have added so much talent to their roster this offseason that it would be hard to even fathom them getting another All-Star-level player. Well, they’ve been linked to a former Sixer that fits that tag.
Jrue Holiday, currently under contract with the Portland Trailblazers, has been rumored to be a buyout candidate either later this offseason or towards the trade deadline. Let’s take a look at what Holiday would bring to Philadelphia, and how it’s even possible with their current roster construction.
The 76ers currently have an open roster spot; however, it would be difficult to use it properly. They are right under the first apron and aren’t able to go over. Signing a player to even a minimum contract would take them over that threshold.
They waived Dalen Terry to make room for LeBron James, and traded Johni Broome to the Los Angeles Clippers to free up space for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. Now, they’re in a situation that more roster juggling would be required to get Holiday on the roster, even with that open roster spot.
The base case scenario for Philadelphia would be that Holiday actually doesn’t get bought out this offseason. If it happens closer to the trade deadline, that’s when they will have the flexibility to sign him. December 4th is the important date to remember when it comes to Philadelphia being able to fill that 15th roster spot.
They have the option to bridge the gap of filling out the roster with ten day contracts until a move makes sense. Holiday or another veteran via buyout makes the most sense as the 76ers maintain flexibility.
Holiday would bring the POA defender that the 76ers have been missing for so long. They signed Dean Wade this offseason, but having him be the main defender on smaller guards may not be the best strategy. Holiday would give them another weapon to deploy.
He also would bring some great experience to a young room of guards. His championship pedigree and veteran status would do wonders for the likes of Tyrese Maxey, Labaron Philon, and especially VJ Edgecombe.
On the court, Holiday would be the main PG off the bench. He could play next to Anfernee Simons to help him with his defensive struggles. That backcourt off the bench would lead an awesome second unit. Wade and Caldwell-Pope would join them as players that fit really well around the starters when minutes are being staggered.
