The New York Yankees recently signed first baseman Paul Goldschmidt to a one-year, $12.5 million contract. They needed to replace their former first baseman Anthony Rizzo, whose two-year contract ended after the 2024 season. Goldschmidt has been remarkable in his role.
Goldschmidt is having a start that the Yankees were hoping he would do from the get-go. He has been impressive both offensively and defensively. Goldschmidt is currently ranked second in the American League in batting average, hitting .361 on the year. He sits second behind Aaron Judge. Additionally, he is tied for sixth in the AL with a .412 on-base percentage that puts him 10th in the majors. Goldschmidt has also only made one error so far this season, which ranks him among the top in the league.
If Goldschmidt can even come remotely close to achieving these numbers throughout the rest of the season, he will be looking at receiving his eighth All-Star selection.
The Yankees have been in need of a reliable first baseman since the retirement of Mark Teixeira in 2016, and Goldschmidt is just the right guy to fill that gap. While he is 37 years old, he is not letting that slow him down. His age is probably a reason for why he is doing so well in New York. He has had valuable experience in the majors. It has provided him with an understanding of how to contribute the most to his team, both from performance and leadership standpoints.
In addition to being in his 15th season in the big leagues, Goldschmidt has a composed demeanor, which is perfect for the Yankee way of professionalism. Goldschmidt understands his assignment. He knows that he has come to New York in order to fill a void at first base. As exhibited so far, he has the maturity to take on that responsibility. He has been more than willing to fill that role. Goldschmidt will continue to show his value to New York throughout the rest of the season.
In terms of Goldschmidt’s achievements, he has put up future Hall of Famer statistics. His career batting average is .290, which is the eighth-highest among active players in the MLB. He also has seven All-Star appearances, which is tied for the 13th-most among active players. Moreover, he has won the Hank Aaron Award twice (awarded to the best offensive player in each league). Additionally, he is a five-time Silver Slugger Award winner (awarded to the best offensive player at each position in each league), the most ever by a first baseman.
On the defensive side, he has excelled as well. He has won four Gold Glove Awards (awarded to the best defensive player at each position in each league). To cap off his accolades, Goldschmidt also won the NL Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award in 2022.
Goldschmidt’s production has been among the best in the league this season. The Yankees should be very pleased with their decision to sign him. They will be hoping for more of this production from him so that they can make another run at winning a World Series this year.
