After a back-and-forth shootout with the Indianapolis Colts, the Kansas City Chiefs get a huge win to improve to 2-0 as Patrick Mahomes dominates. The Colts have not won a game since Week 9 of last season, and the first loss of their 2025 collapse was against the Chiefs. That game was also the Chiefs’ last win of the 2025 season.
The game was up-and-down for the Chiefs, and many flaws were shown that were not seen in Week 1. Despite those flaws, the Chiefs won because Patrick Mahomes had his best game in 3 years and embarrassed the Colts’ defense.
Patrick Mahomes threw 32/47 passes for 382 yards and 3 touchdowns. That’s the most passing yards he’s thrown in a game since Week 7 of 2023. Coming off a mediocre game against Denver, this game proved to everyone that Mahomes is back and his ACL injury is a thing of the past.
Mahomes’ leading target this game was Travis Kelce, who caught 9 passes for 101 yards and a touchdown. The wide receivers all had decent nights, namely Tyquan Thornton, who had 2 clutch plays that sent the Chiefs into field goal range two separate times. Rice and Worthy caught a couple of passes, Rice for 83 yards and a touchdown, and Worthy for 25 yards and a touchdown. For all of the questions the Chiefs have had at the receiver position, they deserve credit for showing up last night.
Kenneth Walker III, undoubtedly the MVP of Week 1, had another impressive game. He had 24 carries for 117 yards as a rusher, and 6 passes for 61 yards as a receiver. Walker already looks like Mahomes’ most powerful weapon this season, being a huge threat on the ground and in the air.
The offensive line allowed 2 sacks, but otherwise had a decent game. Left tackle Khalil Benson looks like a good option when a lineman goes down, but the return of Josh Simmons will be huge for the Chiefs if he can remain healthy.
It was a tough game for Steve Spagnuolo’s defense, which allowed Jonathan Taylor to run for 92 yards and 2 touchdowns. The defensive line had a rough start to the game, as Jonathan Taylor was able to rush through wide-open gaps. The line strengthened later in the game, but Taylor still managed to find holes and make the Chiefs pay. Aside from Kristian Fulton’s impressive interception, Daniel Jones was surgical the entire night despite losing Alec Pierce to a heel injury. The Chiefs’ defensive line got some pressure but was never able to sack Jones, which complicated the Chiefs’ plan to blitz.
The defense stopped the Colts in their final drive, but there were too many big plays allowed by the Chiefs defense overall. The deep pass to Laquan Treadwell that put the Colts in field goal range, and the 24-yard touchdown run by Jonathan Taylor were both hard to swallow for a defense that allowed only 10 points the week prior. This defense is young, and there are resemblances to the 2022 Chiefs’ defense. Still, Spagnuolo’s squad will have to improve if they want to beat the best teams in the league.
The Chiefs finally looked like the Chiefs of old. Lots of scoring, huge plays, and Travis Kelce finding open space like he’s in his prime. Patrick Mahomes did not look bothered at all by his ACL, which is a great sign for this team. If anyone had any more doubts about the Chiefs bouncing back from their disaster 2025 season, they should be gone by now. The more Mahomes dominates, the scarier this team will look late in the season. The Chiefs are 2-0 heading into Week 3’s matchup against the worst team in the NFL, the Miami Dolphins.
