The Baltimore Orioles extended their win streak to a season-best four games with a 5–1 victory over the Seattle Mariners on June 3rd. This win marks the beginning of a crucial West Coast road trip, and it came with a strong pitching performance and a welcome return to the lineup for outfielder Colton Cowser.
This current win streak is more than just a hot stretch; it represents a dramatic turnaround for a team that entered the season with one of the weakest rotations in baseball. In their last four games, Orioles starting pitchers have combined for 26.2 innings while allowing just two earned runs. That’s not only a major improvement; it’s elite production for a group that had been the team’s biggest question mark.
Cowser’s Crucial Return
The biggest storyline heading into this game was the return of Cowser, who had been on the injured list for nearly two months after suffering a broken thumb in the first series of the season against the Toronto Blue Jays. His absence, combined with injuries to fellow outfielders Cedric Mullins, Tyler O’Neill, and Ramon Laureano, left the Orioles dangerously thin in the outfield. The team was so depleted that utilityman Jorge Mateo was forced into regular duty in center field, well outside his natural position.

Cowser’s return could not have come at a better time, and he made an immediate impact. Batting sixth in the lineup, Cowser went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning, extending the Orioles’ lead and providing some breathing room in what was a close game at the time. Beyond the homer, Cowser brings a much-needed combination of offensive pop and defensive reliability. His presence allows the Orioles to better align their outfield and use players in roles that suit their skill sets, instead of relying on fill-ins to carry the load.
Game Recap: Orioles vs. Mariners, June 3
The Orioles wasted no time getting on the board. In the top of the first inning, Adley Rutschman, Gunnar Henderson, and Ryan O’Hearn each reached base to set the table. Ramón Urías delivered with a sacrifice fly to bring Rutschman home for the game’s first run.
The Mariners tied it in the bottom of the second when Rowdy Tellez launched a solo homer off Orioles starter Tomoyuki Sugano. That would be the only blemish on Sugano’s otherwise stellar night. The Japanese right-hander pitched seven innings of one-run ball, striking out five and walking just one. He’s been sharp in back-to-back outings, looking increasingly comfortable in his transition to MLB play.

Baltimore regained the lead in the fifth inning thanks to O’Hearn, who singled home Rutschman to put the Orioles ahead 2–1. One inning later, Cowser’s solo shot made it 3–1. The Orioles continued to tack on insurance in the ninth, with Heston Kjerstad and Jackson Holliday each driving in a run to push the score to 5–1.
Bryan Baker and closer Félix Bautista shut things down in the final two innings, keeping the Mariners off the board and preserving the win.
Signs of Life From Rutschman
One of the most encouraging signs from this game was the breakout performance by Rutschman. The Orioles’ star catcher has been mired in a prolonged slump for much of the season but showed signs of turning the corner with a 3-for-5 night at the plate. If Rutschman can begin to produce more consistently, it could be a major spark for an offense that has struggled with consistency outside of Holliday and O’Hearn.
End Of My Orioles Rant
With Cowser back in the mix and the rotation finally finding its stride, the Orioles appear to be trending in the right direction. The win over Seattle wasn’t just another game, it was a signal that Baltimore might finally be finding the balance and depth it’s lacked for much of the season. A series sweep of the White Sox was the first promising sign, but then again, it is the White Sox. Now that the Orioles are performing against a serious contender in the Mariners, their performance can not be disregarded.
The Orioles will look to keep the momentum going in Game 2 of the series as they continue their road trip through the AL West.
