The Detroit Red Wings traveled to take on the Edmonton Oilers. Both teams were playing well and had win streaks on the line. Detroit goaltender Alex Lyon was looking for his first win since January 4, 2025, while Edmonton goaltender Stuart Skinner had won ten of the last 12 games at home. Which team would meet the cooler?

First Period
The teams traded zone time and pressure until the 13:53 mark, with Detroit taking the first penalty of the game. Edmonton took advantage of a muffed clear attempt, with center Leon Draisaitl banking the loose puck. Draisaitl continued to be a problem for the Red Wings, with high-danger opportunities both off his stick, and setting up others.
With 9:31 to go, and Edmonton left winger Jeff Skinner scored off Red Wings’ goalie Alex Lyon’s poor rebound control, making it 2-0. Detroit was being outworked at both ends of the ice. With 6:03 to go, and the desperation caught up to Detroit, left winger Joe Veleno was called for tripping. The young Detroit defense had no answer for the Edmonton forecheck, which led in shots on goal 14-7, after one.

Second Period
Edmonton got their third PP in a row, early in the second. They had plenty of pressure, but couldn’t find the back of the net. Detroit decided to come to life, center Dylan Larkin, and left winger Michael Rasmussen, scoring within two minutes of each other, making it a tie game after two. The Red Wings were also unsuccessful in their first and only power play in the game thus far.

Third Period
It was a tale of two periods heading into the third and deciding frame. Edmonton got another power play opportunity, but Detroit, playing with much more urgency, killed the pp. 7:56 into the third, Draisaitl was called for slashing. Detroit had multiple scoring opportunities, but Skinner was up to the task. Both goalies stepped up, keeping it 2-2. Edmonton picked up the pace and pressure in the final three minutes, finding seams and getting great chances, but Lyon was game. This game needed overtime.
Overtime
If nothing else, three-on-three is exciting. With 3:20 left in overtime, Edmonton was called for interference, making it four on three. With all the open ice, both teams had chances on the PP, but nothing came from them, and it went to a shootout.
Shootout – Oilers Vs Red Wings
After a shaky start to the game, Detroit netted their first two shootout opportunities, while Edmonton missed them both. Lucas Raymond and Dylan Larkin for the Red Wings, and Leon Draisaitl and Jeff Skinner for the Oilers. This marks Detroit’s second two-goal comeback win in a row.
