What’s the point of having captains on an NFL football team, and why do the New England Patriots need six of them? Walt Whitman wasn’t thinking about the Patriots when he wrote O Captain! My Captain! in 1865. It’s now 161 years later, and here we are.
The Patriots have officially announced their captains for 2026 this week: Kevin Byard III, Hunter Henry, Marcus Jones, Morgan Moses, and Robert Spillane. While all five players may deserve the extra letter added to their jersey, there’s an additional name on the list that means a little more for the future of New England.
Drake Maye is a Patriots captain.
Being the quarterback of the team automatically makes Maye the most visible player in Foxboro. However, being named captain means something different. Quarterbacks are handed footballs because of their arm. Captains get handed the extra letter because their teammates trust them. For a Patriot’s franchise still trying to establish exactly who it is under Mike Vrabel, that distinction matters.
New England isn’t just ironing a “C” on the jerseys for fashion; look at the other names that surround Drake Maye on the list. The group includes veterans, established leaders and representatives from offense, defense, and special teams. That’s not random. It offers a glimpse into what the Patriots value in their guidance. The NFL began formally promoting the ceremonial season-long captain program and the “C” jersey patch in 2007 specifically to emphasize player leadership. The Patriots are trusting Maye to wear the “C” for years to come.
The Patriots naming six isn’t an NFL requirement. Teams decide for themselves how large their leadership group should be. Baltimore, Indianapolis and Atlanta chose five this season, while some franchises went well beyond six. Drake Maye didn’t simply inherit the title because every starting quarterback gets one. Neither quarterback was selected as a captain for the Atlanta Falcons’ 2026 season. Maye’s teammates chose him as someone to represent and command the team to a successful season.
They put their trust in Maye.
Hunter Henry was named captain for his veteran leadership on offense. Morgan Moses has spent over a decade parting defensive fronts like the Red Sea. Robert Spillane and Kevin Byard III bring additional veteran leadership to the defense. Marcus Jones contributes to nearly every conceivable phase of football short of selling hotdogs and beer in the stands at halftime.
Being viewed as a captain of the New England Patriots is a nice thing going into September football. Real challenges will come when New England loses two games, the offense struggles, someone makes a mistake, gets hurt, and Maye himself has a bad Sunday. That’s when the “C” becomes more than just an extra letter. The Patriots need their quarterback to be a leader among the team when Sundays aren’t coming so easily. They need someone to stick it out, to fight, and to keep the faith when all hope in the sails of victory look lost.
Captains are placed on teams to exemplify professionalism on and off the field. They get to do fun tasks like tossing a coin before a game, but they also need to cool the hot players down when frustration takes over. They need speak up when something isn’t going well. The veteran leaders in the position are held to the task of helping younger players learn expectations and routines.
The New England Patriots have captained their way through windy waters before. Super Bowl LI is a prime example of a Patriots comeback win. New England fell behind Atlanta 28–3 with 8:31 left in the third quarter, then scored 31 unanswered points to win 34–28 in overtime. It remains the largest comeback in Super Bowl history. When the Patriots were down by 25 points at halftime, captain Brady didn’t panic. He simply told his brothers in the locker room to fight. They were still in the game, and Brady knew the team could pull it off.
Players will take emotional cues from their quarterback and the calmness in Brady helped the team to victory. Never once did Brady pretend to win the game alone. He credited the mental toughness of the entire team, rather than portraying himself as the hero. These are traits the Patriots have already seen their quarterback demonstrate.
The Patriots don’t need Drake Maye to be the next Tom Brady or give locker room speeches reminiscent of a young Walt Whitman. Nobody expects Maye to erase a 25-point Super Bowl deficit tomorrow, but that’s the point of putting the “C” on his chest now. Leadership and guidance are all fun and games and easy at 28-3 when you’re the team with 28. The Patriots need Drake Maye to be the one that comes to the rescue and encourages his teammates during the entire 60 minutes of game play. Maye can become the voice the players follow when they’re the team with three.
Everyone knows that it’s never really over until the fat lady sings, and unless Marcus Jones gets those hotdogs into the lady, the Patriots have team captains that will clear the field, part the seas of doubt, and leave the fans wanting more.
O Captain, my Captain, this victory ship is Maye’s to steer.
