Welcome to a new featured series of NHL rumors on StadiumRant.com! According to sources, we will cover the latest rumors around the league. With just 37 days until the NHL trade deadline, teams are evaluating their trade options to improve their success. More trades are on the horizon. There’s already been a massive trade between three teams. Let’s take a look at the latest NHL rumors.

Toronto Maple Leafs – Mitch Marner

Rumor: Per – Adam Proteau – thehockeynews.com. If Marner becomes available, the return would be astronomical.

Marner is an exceptional player, and he should be paid accordingly. What if Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving can’t agree with Marner on a contract extension? The wheels could be turning as to what kind of deal the Leafs could get if they decide to move him. Proteau suggests two possibilities if that occurs.

Send him to Vancouver for Elias Pettersson. We all know that the Canucks are considering options for Pettersson as well as J.T. Miller. Marner would expect a big bump to his next contract, thinking he is currently at $10.9 million. Both players are about the same age, and the salaries match until Marner gets an expected raise. Like most trades, this would help both teams, but would the Leafs be cautious about losing a talent like Marner for Pettersson, whose production has faltered this season?

Trade him to the Utah Hockey Club for Clayton Keller. Now again, this would help both teams. Keller is more of a goal scorer, while Marner is quite the playmaker, with 53 assists in 50 games this season. Keller still has three years remaining on his reasonable $7.15 million deal. It would save the Leafs some money, and don’t forget that the Utah team has a wealth of draft picks to offer.

Marner has stated that he wants to remain in Toronto, but things change when money is involved, such as the Mikko Rantanen trade.

Buffalo Sabres – Owen Power

Rumor: Per – thefourthperiod.com. The Sabres are looking to find a way to improve, and Owen Power could be on the market.

The Sabres are willing to listen to offers for defenseman Owen Power. He is signed to an eight-year $8.35 million pact through the 2030-31 season. The Sabres have committed quite a bit to him, but thus far, the team is faltering miserably. They stand 19-26-5, which places them dead last in the Eastern Conference. Power has six goals and 20 assists thus far this season, which puts him on a pace of 10 goals and 42 points across a full 82 games.

He no doubt can make a difference on other teams. Power is 22 years old. He has a ton of time to grow his game on the ice and become a special player. If the Sabres entertain trade offers on Power, it does not necessarily mean they will likely trade him. Doing so midseason will prove difficult, even if he doesn’t have no-trade protection.

The Sabres have made it known that they are interested in obtaining Elias Pettersson. Putting Power out there as a possibility may be a strategic move that could give them the inside track at acquiring Pettersson. Now that Power’s name is in the NHL rumors, multiple teams’ interest will be peaking. It can only be hoped that if Powers is dealt with, it will help the Sabres become a more competitive team.

Calgary Flames – Deadline decisions

Rumor Per – Jason Bukala – sportsnet.ca. The Flames should stand pat at the deadline.

The Flames are doing well, standing in the last wild-card spot with a 24-18–7 record good for 55 points. Vancouver is tied with them, so a battle for the playoffs is happening. The Calgary club has nearly $18 million in cap space and has some prospects for the future. They don’t need to go there out and make significant changes. Are they going to the Cup Final this season? Probably not. Their future seems bright, and staying the course may be the best option.

With the Flames playing well, as Bukala put it, “They play like, they’re not out of it. When they’re out of a game, they’re not out of a game”.

We must see how far the Flames go this season and whether they make any changes. As the saying goes, “If it ain’t broke, why fix it?”
